Coming of Age and Romance

Readings: “Araby,” by James Joyce “A and P,” by John Updike “The Shabbat,” by Marjane Satrapi Choose one or two of the following questions to explore from the above readings for your responses to MAJOR JOURNAL 3. Must use passages from the texts as well as outside sources (must be 500 words in length). Discuss the stories’ similarities in terms of the settings in which the young people are navigating. What roles, if any, do parents or adults play in the Coming of Age stories of these characters? What happens in the plots that moves the young people from innocence to a more mature place in their worlds? What are the author’s attitudes about Coming of Age?
