Civil Society

Define civil society, the marketplace of ideas (MOI), public advocacy and the concept of “audience.” What are the advantages of the MOI? What are its problems (from the lecture)? How do civil society organizations (CSOs) interact with the MOI? How do CSOs use public speaking? Why is the “third sector” good for democracy? What are the problems of too much bonding and not enough bridging? Define dogmatism. Use an example. How can dogmatism cause cognitive dissonance? How can the MOI be distorted by this combination? What effects can a distorted third sector have on democracy? Use an example. Define the steps of perspectivity and skepticism. Explain how using each tool improves the MOI and democracy.
