Group Communication
Overview In Module 3, we talked about the levels of effective communication from political to emotional and intellectual. In this assignment, we examine self-awareness and reflection in group work. To function successfully in a group, you need to be able to communicate clearly on intellectual and emotional levels. The key to open and honest reflection is an environment in which participants feel safe and comfortable. In order for group members to express their thoughts and opinions, they must feel that they can do so without fear of attack or condemnation. It is the facilitator’s job to create such an environment, to monitor participant’s comfort levels, and to take the necessary steps to maintain safety. This includes understanding and planning for individual differences in needs, abilities, fears, and apprehensions. Participants who feel safe are more likely to make honest and genuine contributions and to feel camaraderie and respect towards other group members. Instructions Be sure you have read Chapters 8 and 9 in the eText before you begin. Write a 2-3 page reflection essay examining self-awareness and reflection in group-work. In the writing, you will demonstrate the ability to frame the concepts of self-awareness and reflection. A good way to start working on self-awareness is to assess your strengths and weaknesses. Understanding your communication style is the first step to becoming more aware of the different communication styles of others. Your writing should reveal how through self-reflection we allow ourselves to understand our personal reaction to a group situation. Also, reflecting on others perspectives can help us get a better sense of where they are coming from and therefore what strategies might be most effective for engaging them toward effective group work. Incorporate your opinions in the essay supported by scholarly research. The essay should include a cover/title page using Works Cited for (MLA) or References for (APA). Use 2-3 outside sources not mentioned in the text materials or Overview. The essay will be 2-3 pages double-spaced not to include cover and citation page; and approximately 1000 word count.
