There are four recognized categories of APNs, including nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists and certified nurse-midwives. APNs can provide either primary care or specialized care for patients in complex medical situations. Their practice is recognized, regulated and licensed by individual states.Nurse practitioners provide primary and specialty care to their patients. They might practice independently, but they also collaborate closely with doctors and other health care professionals. They perform comprehensive physical examinations, diagnose and manage common health conditions, order diagnostic tests and prescribe therapeutic medications and treatments. Nurse practitioners may provided family health care, or they may limit their practice to a specific population, such as adults, children or the elderly.
