Florence had a deep affection for God and the Bible when she was a small child.
She claims that she heard God’s voice calling her to a specific mission on February 7, 1837, while wandering in a garden (1, 2).
Florence began working at the hospital in 1844.
Her parents, on the other hand, were against it.
Nursing was not a respectable profession in mid-nineteenth-century England (3).
She volunteered in hospitals in Germany and France in July 1850. (1).
She then returned to London in 1853 to serve as a manager at the Institute of Sick Women Hospital (2).
Something happened a year later that changed the course of Florence’s life forever.
The Crimean War began in 1854 when the United Kingdom, France, and Turkey declared war on Russia.
Although Russia was beaten in one of the battles in Alma in September, England suffered a large number of casualties (2).
In British military camps, there were little medical services and a high death rate.
Florence took advantage of the fact that Sydney Herbert, the minister of war, was a friend (3).
Florence traveled to a British military camp on the outskirts of Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1854 with 38 nurses (2).
Florence saw the deplorable state of health in these colonies.
Injured soldiers were left on the floor, and a small number of physicians struggled to care for them in a filthy atmosphere with little resources (4).
Florence put her arithmetic skills to work and kept track of the hospital’s death rate.
According to statistics, six hundred soldiers died from communicable and infectious diseases for every thousand soldiers who were injured (2).
The interventions in Florence were rather straightforward.
She made every effort to keep the place clean.
She brought medical supplies, fresh fruit, and clean water (2).
The mortality rate fell from 60% to 42% and then to 2.2% as a result of our study (4).
Soldiers looked up to Florence like a mother.
She used to go to patients’ tent with the lamp every night (3).
In England, her outstanding work drew notice (5).
She also took advantage of her celebrity and was successful in gaining the support of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and Prime Minister Lord Palmerston.
Florence requested authorization to conduct an official probe into the military hospitals.
The request was granted, and the Royal Institute of Military Medicine was founded.
She was an outstanding humanitarian and scientist.
Nightingale was also a statistician, having created a unique pie chart (Figure 2). (2).
