HIST-170 Freedom Summer Guide

I’m working on a History question and need guidance to help me study.

In 1964, SNCC determined that to effect change in Mississippi they needed to bring a larger number of volunteers to the state to work on voter registration and community building activities. “Freedom Summer” was a program that recruited volunteers from colleges and universities across the country, black and white, men and women, and brought them to Mississippi for the summer to work on civil rights. Those who had been in Mississippi in 1963, like Bob Moses and Anne Moody, knew the dangers of bringing over four hundred young people to the state, and so SNCC prepared a training session for all volunteers before they left for the South. Volunteers were given documents like those attached to help prepare them for Mississippi. For this assignment, combine your knowledge of SNCC, Anne Moody’s experience in Mississippi, and the guidelines provided in these documents to make a Do and Don’t guide for students heading south. What security steps should they take to keep themselves safe? How should they conduct themselves to make sure they uphold SNCC values and nonviolence?
