Eyes on the Prize Metareflection Essay

Throughout the course you have been viewing episodes from the Eyes on the Prize documentary series for information on the civil rights movement, but you have also been assessing each episode in your video journals for the way it presents the information and how the content relates or does not relate to the course resources and readings. Now that we have reached the end of the semester and you have watched all the assigned episodes, you will think and reflect on the entirety of the series and the narrative of the Civil Rights movement that it presents. As we learned from Jacqueline Dowd Hall at the beginning of the course, the way that the civil rights movement is presented and learned about has broad implications not just for history, but also for politics, and particularly for race relations in our country.

In a 3 – 4 page essay (double spaced), make a proposal for a new documentary on the “long civil rights movement.” Include an introduction to the series, what you hope to accomplish, and a breakdown of 4 or more episodes and what they would cover. What part of the approach of Eyes on the Prize would you want to keep? What new aspects or perspectives would you add to your series?

(You can assume a good budget and access to experts you want to interview. Bear in mind that at this stage of history, many of the participants in the movement are elderly or have passed away, so conducting new interviews may not be possible.)
