Downsizing Within Supply Chain

E-commerce offers a multitude of enhancements to all areas of the supply chain. Companies such as Dell have saved millions simply by integrating systems and capturing data. In an increasingly global economy, companies attempt to maintain multiple storage facilities in many regions around the world. The Internet is a prime driver of the necessity to gain worldwide product supply access. E-business knows no geographical limitations, and companies must position themselves to fill orders or perform services near and far. Inventory control, accurate forecasting, freight and labor costs, quality indices, and transaction efficiencies all play significant roles in the supply chain. Supply chain management processes and e-business have effected a transformation in the operations and profitability of many companies. However, there are many opportunities for companies to further improve their supply chain management integration processes, collaborations, and systems by exploiting the potential of e-business and IT resources. Furthermore, while e-business offers great tools to link businesses, it is not the only factor in the success of supply chain management. Each business relationship or industry has distinct needs, and management must address those needs by developing appropriate processes in the supply chain.
