The Yellow Wallpaper

This essay should be at least 7 pages long, plus a Works Cited page. It should be an argumentative essay in which you present your interpretation of The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and try to convince the reader that your interpretation is correct.   The essay should include research from at least five secondary sources. Citations should follow the MLA style guidelines. Thesis: (please use this as a thesis) Gilman uses symbolism and imagery to chart her narrator’s descent into madness, a descent which is foreshadowed early on in the story and which serves not only as a portrait of one woman’s suffering but also as an object lesson in the profound psychological impact of female oppression. The premise of the paper will include: (feel free to add anything relevant to the nature of the thesis and paper) •Background information about the author •The current state of women’s movement at the time of writing •The conditions as to how mental health is perceived and treated •Explanation of the narrator’s descent into madness •Psychological impacts of oppression The paper will focus mainly on: •The imagery and symbolism used throughout the story to showcase the narrator’s descent into madness.
