The Module 2 assessment tasks you with the synthesis of the four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Read the scenario below, and, using material from the textbook as well as your own research, construct an essay that addresses the organizational connections between the four functions. Scenario: Well-known big-box discounter Target® Corporation has recently begun a campaign to shift away from its reputation as a discount chain and more to mid-range retailer offering affordable items in partnerships with luxury designers, expanded offerings for apparel and the home, and more organic and craft-oriented grocery offerings. This change in strategy has resulted in a new corporate direction for the organization, which is summarized in its mission statement: “To help all families discover the joy of everyday life. That’s our purpose. Our mission. The promise of surprises, fun, ease and inspiration at every turn, no matter when, where or how you shop.” Assessment Checklist: Describe how the four functions of management relate to each other. Introduce Target and its current corporate mission. Keeping in mind the organization’s mission, identify one strategic goal and trace that goal through the tactical and operational levels of planning with one specific example at each level. Specify the appropriate type of role in the organization responsible for managing the goals at each level (organizing function) as well as what forms of power would be most useful in each level (leading function). Describe at least one formal control that would aid in evaluating progress toward the operational goal you identified. Be sure to indicate how you would measure the control.
