No unread replies. No replies. Active discussion participation makes your learning experience that much richer. Discussion in this course is designed to simulate a classroom discussion. As others join in the discussion, you should read what has already been posted and then add substantively to the discussion. Please remember to post by Wednesday! Get in the habit of checking the discussions as often as you can to see what others have posted and to respond. The earlier in the week that you begin posting, the deeper the conversation and learning will be. We will go through each question one at a time together, discussing each one until we are ready to move on to the next question as a class. I will assist you in moving through the questions. The first question in this discussion is opinion and experience-based, so you can begin immediately. When people are diagnosed with a condition like cancer, they are often compelled to gather information about their condition and its treatment. Their family members are as well. The health professionals who work with these individuals are also tasked with staying up-to-the-second on the latest information. Most likely, social media will play a role in the information-gathering process for both groups. As you consider the discussion questions, imagine that you are working as a professional in your area of emphasis with an individual who has been diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer. A health professional’s role is often to provide information and share sources for additional information. In addition to printed information often provided on cancer and treatment protocols, many patients will want to learn more on their own through the Internet and the interconnectedness of social media. In your opinion and based on all you have learned in your time at Excelsior, discuss the following questions together: What are some concerns with the use of social media to learn more about cancer? What kind of consumer-focused social media would you be likely to recommend, if any? What type of social media would you use to gather information from the health/medical perspective? For subsequent questions please meaningfully integrate what you learned from the course materials, as well as additional supporting articles or videos that you choose to include. What are some key criteria in establishing the credibility of social media resources? To what extent do these criteria vary by type of social media, e.g. blogs, discussion boards, videos, Facebook posts, and tweets? Blogs are especially popular in the area of cancer treatment, for both professionals and consumers. Share with the class an example (with direct hyperlink) of a credible blog related to colorectal cancer. What makes this blog a credible source of information? Share an example (with direct hyperlink) of a cancer-related blog of questionable credibility. What diminishes the credibility of this blog? As you discuss your findings, consider the bigger picture and discuss the credibility of the information for various stakeholders, including people affected by cancer and health professionals. To close out the week, let’s consider how we communicate our concerns about social media with our patients/consumers and their loved ones. Assume that the individual’s family has found a discussion on a “cutting edge” treatment approach to advanced colorectal cancer on a social media web site. The family is excited about the potential. You have serious concerns about its credibility. How would you address these concerns with the family? Consult the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to make your initial post, click on “Reply.” Then copy/paste the text into the message field, and click “Post Reply.”  To respond to a peer, click “Reply” beneath her or his post and continue as with an initial post. This discussion will be graded using the SHS Discussion rubric. Please review this rubric prior to beginning the discussion. You can view the rubric on the Course Rubrics page within the Start Here module. All discussions combined are worth 25% of your final course grade. Participation in this discussion assesses the following module outcomes: Evaluate the credibility of evidence presented through social media. (CO 1) Discriminate the credibility of social media-based evidence and defend your conclusion. (CO 1) Formulate strategies to assist consumers/patients
