Referring to the Kaaba in Mecca (FIG. 4.19) and the Djingareyber Mosque in Timbuktu (FIG. 4.20) describe the structures and explain the function of these architectural structures in Islam in the beginning of Islam as well as today ( make sure that you understand the difference between these two structures!) . You can find additional images on the internet (Google Images – type in the individual names and the places). Referring to the Kaaba and the Mosque as architectural structures of a religion, explain the difference between the two structures, and compare their use to the architectural structures of Western faiths, such as Christianity. Make sure that you understand and explain the beginnings of Islam as well as the role of Muhammad and the Qur’an.
