Art Speigelman’s Book
January 12th, 2021
Postmodern literature is often preoccupied with issues of temporality. In his graphic memoir, The Complete Maus, Art Spiegelman does not tell a linear story, but rather he moves between frames from Vladek’s retelling of past events to his present moment of recording his father’s story. In so doing, Art Spiegelman conflates our understanding of Vladek’s story of survival with his own second-generation witnessing. Choose one scene from your reading and discuss the way Art Speigelman handles issues of narration and temporality in The Complete Maus.
