Case Study on Moral Status
The moral status of a fetus takes special consideration, it could come into conflict with a pregnant woman’s right to choose what happens to her body. There are three primary ways of determining the moral status of a fetus: A fetus has the same rights as a living being; A fetus has no rights, or That the fetus will have increasing moral status with increasing gestation (Brown, 2018). This paper will explore the Christian view of the nature of human persons and analyze the Case study on “Fetal Abnormality,” including the theories of moral status used by each character in the case study. I will also discuss how the theories influenced each of the character’s recommendations for action.
Christian View of the Nature of Human Persons
The Christian faith views every human being in the universe as a living image of God. This image concludes into the mystery of Christ, who is considered to be the perfect image of God and the only heavenly and human person who reveals God to human beings (Müller, 2020). According to Christians, the human person should be preserved, and the human society needs to be renewed. In the Biblical understanding, the human person is innately linked with the earth. For instance, the Hebrew word for both man and the earth, adamah, is the same (Müller, 2020). The human person’s relationship with God automatically opens the human being to social reality.
The Christian understanding of the human is man and woman, who find the highest contentment in the reciprocal gift of self to the other. This gift is of great value and meaning and portrays that the human person, similar to God, stoops down from himself and establishes an interpersonal dialogue with others (Clauson, 2015). The Christian view of the nature of human persons is in line with the theory of Cognitive properties, which states that all humans have cognition. Cognition comprises of awareness, perception, memory, understanding, and thinking capacity.
Human persons are perceived as having self-awareness, which entails awareness of time, past, and the future. According to the theory of Cognitive properties, human beings have been given the freedom to act and take part in purposeful acts (Stahl & Kilner, 2019). Besides, human persons can give and appreciate the reasons for taking action. They also can communicate using a language, which is a big deal since most creatures cannot communicate (Stahl & Kilner, 2019). Lastly, the theory perceives humans as having rationality and high order volition.
The theory of Cognitive properties is related to the intrinsic human value and dignity since it portrays human beings as having the highest value compared to other creatures (Stahl & Kilner, 2019). Human beings are at the top of the cognitive ladder and thus should be valued and treated with the utmost respect.

Case Study: Fetal Abnormality
Jessica is a 30-year-old immigrant from Mexico City. She and her husband Marco have been in the United States for the last three years and have finally earned enough money to move out of their Aunt Maria’s home and into an apartment of their own. They are both hard workers. Jessica works 50 hours a week at a local restaurant and Marco has been contracting side jobs in construction. Six months before their move to an apartment, Jessica finds out she is pregnant.
Four months later, Jessica and Marco arrive at the county hospital, a large, public, nonteaching hospital. A preliminary ultrasound indicates a possible abnormality with the fetus. Further scans are conducted, and it is determined that the fetus has a rare condition in which it has not developed any arms and will not likely develop them. There is also a 25% chance that the fetus may have Down syndrome.

Dr. Wilson, the primary attending physician, is seeing Jessica for the first time, since she and Marco did not receive earlier prenatal care over concerns about finances. Marco insists that Dr. Wilson refrain from telling Jessica the scan results, assuring him that he will tell his wife himself when she is emotionally ready for the news. While Marco and Dr. Wilson are talking in another room, Aunt Maria walks into the room with a distressed look on her face. She can tell that something is wrong and inquires of Dr. Wilson. After hearing of the diagnosis, she walks out of the room wailing loudly and praying aloud.
Marco and Dr. Wilson continue their discussion, and Dr. Wilson insists that he has an obligation to Jessica as his patient and that she has a right to know the diagnosis of the fetus. He furthermore is intent on discussing all relevant factors and options regarding the next step, including abortion. Marco insists on taking some time to think of how to break the news to Jessica, but Dr. Wilson, frustrated with the direction of the conversation, informs the husband that such a choice is not his to make. Dr. Wilson proceeds back across the hall, where he walks in on Aunt Maria awkwardly praying with Jessica and phoning the priest. At that point, Dr. Wilson gently but briefly informs Jessica of the diagnosis and lays out the option for abortion as a responsible medical alternative, given the quality of life such a child would have. Jessica looks at him and struggles to hold back her tears.
Jessica is torn between her hopes of a better socioeconomic position and increased independence, along with her conviction that all life is sacred. Marco will support Jessica in whatever decision she makes but is finding it difficult not to view the pregnancy and the prospects of a disabled child as a burden and a barrier to their economic security and plans. Dr. Wilson lays out all of the options but clearly makes his view known that abortion is “scientifically” and medically a wise choice in this situation. Aunt Maria pleads with Jessica to follow through with the pregnancy and allow what “God intends” to take place and urges Jessica to think of her responsibility as a mother.

Human beings and their origins is a question that many theories have not answered clearly. Scientific research and knowledge regarding human beings are rapidly growing; however, there is a lot that science alone cannot tell (Grand Canyon University, 2019). Philosophical and theological ideologies have tried to explain areas that scientific research cannot explain. Religion have their own worldview of what a human being is, its origin, and values. Both religion and spirituality as well as science give human beings some sort of moral status. For instance, medical professionals believe that humans are important creatures and anything causing pain to them should be eliminated through medical interventions. Religion believes that taking a life is prohibited and disease and suffering should not be an excuse for the action (Crisp & Sanders, 2018). This paper uses the presented case study to discuss moral status regarding the Christian view of the nature of human beings.
