For this Art Evaluation, you will be writing a movie review on your own. Watch this video called “Building the Great Cathedrals”:   and write a one-page summary answering the following questions: How, without the benefit of modern tools and technology, did medieval builders construct Gothic Cathedrals?  ?How was stained glass used in a new way in the Gothic era?  What is something new you learned after watching the documentary?

Topic: The use of Yayoi Kusama’s work shows a perfect example of how art as therapy can provide a coping mechanism for mental illness. This can help decrease stigma on mental illnesses through the influence of the success of Kusama’s career.The paper has to present an argument in relation to the subject and the artwork and develop the discussion in the paper. Has to include the pertinent historical period and pertinent political, social , or historical views as well as the context of the artist’s subjectivity, practice, materials, and intended meaning. Paper has to include 6 different citations. Don’t include citation web pages such as Wikipedia, metropolitan museum web info, khan academy, or any other unauthorized essays that are not legitimate sources. The criteria for the assessment includes quality of argument and use of originality, organization and presentation of ideas.

Research a public artwork that interests you. Consider art in public buildings, parks, schools and colleges, churches, etc. Do you consider the work controversial? Explain your reasons. Was the artwork publicly funded? Are you in favor of such works receiving public funding? You may use historical or contemporary examples. Find 3 examples that will give you a variety of topics for the essay. Then compare and contrast the artworks and the role of public art. Include in the essay: 3 image examples of artworks you are referencing Works cited page for your research Expectations: I am looking for an essay that connects the theme to art and the artist to research and then how this has been interesting to you. This is an opinion essay that reflects a researched and prepared perspective. Share your well thought out and organized response to the artists you have discovered and how they have connected to the theme of art in public spaces presented in the book.

Choose one work from the ouvre of the Gao Brothers that really speaks to you. Include it in your 400 word discussion of the piece. Your discussion should include a very brief formal analysis of the piece and an explanation for why you selected it. At greater length, you should explain how you see it as a successful – or unsuccessful – example of Protest Art. What is it that makes it impactful? Or not? What is it that helps to create change? Or not? Etc. __________________________

First summarize what the trend is and explain your position: do you think it’s a bad thing? Is it a good thing and gets more people into museums and to see art? Is seeing art through your phone distracting? Have artists or museums changed their approach because of this? Are places like the museum of illusions, ice cream, selfies, etc. ‘real’ museums or something else? The version we will watch is the Broadway touring production. It stars Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett. She originated the role on Broadway. His actions stem from the love he once felt for his wife and the love he still feels for his daughter. With criminal activity commonplace and general immorality the norm on the streets of Victorian England, one can almost forgive the revolting act of murdering the wealthy and serving them back to their colleagues in meat pies. It almost seems a natural conclusion for someone so wrongly done, by a system he cannot possibly change through just means. Since society around him is so unjust and corrupt (the very man he seeks to destroy is a law-breaking, greedy judge), Sweeney is left with no choice but to resort to the skills, tools and resources his profession has afforded him. Sweeney Todd uses his very work (a fitting device as a member of the lower, working class) to seek justice upon someone who is so without justice or fairness (and ironically, a respected civic judge).”  Assignment: Please write a two-to-three page reaction essay to address the question below.  The essay must include certain ideas as explained below. You also must reference the readings from this week to bolster your arguments.  Consider the following before answering the question: Siding with Sweeney does not necessarily mean you approve of his actions or justify them morally, it could only mean you were hoping he would succeed in killing the judge and the beadle.  In fact, using the word “side” might be problematic. It implies that you align with, or approve of, Sweeney’s actions.
