Discussion Questions By the due date assigned, post your response to the assigned discussion questions in the below Discussion Area. It is important to support what you say with relevant citations in the APA format from both the course materials and outside resources. Include the South University Online Library in your research activities utilizing not only the nursing resource database, but also those pertaining to education, business, and human resources. No later than by the end of the week, review and comment on the discussion question responses posted by at least two of your peers. Always use constructive language. All comments should be posted to the appropriate topic in this Discussion Area. Discussion Question Formulating the Research Question, Problem Statement, Research Purpose In the Week 1 discussion forum you had an opportunity to present a potential problem and an innovative solution specific to your role specialization. In addition, you have reviewed the literature to identify qualitative and quantitative research articles and submitted annotated bibliographies to provide evidence supporting the problem. Considering the feedback provided to you by the faculty member it is now time to prepare your problem statement, research purpose, and research question. First share your refined problem and proposed solution (given your review of literature this may have changed depending on the evidence you were able to provide). Next, follow the steps to help define your research question. Craft the problem statement and research purpose. Design your research question aimed at solving (a part of) the problem and include the following components which will focus the literature review. PICOT Question: Patient, Population or Problem What are the characteristics of the patient or population? What is the condition or disease you are interested in? Intervention or exposure What do you want to do with this patient (e.g. treat, diagnose, observe)? Comparison What is the alternative to the intervention (e.g. placebo, different drug, surgery)? Outcome What are the relevant outcomes (e.g. morbidity, death, complications)? Ensure that the research question is answerable, feasible and clinically relevant The next step in Submissions Area will be to develop a research hypothesis from the research question.

Submit an evidence-based practice paper about cultural competency in mental health nursing. An evidence-based practice paper allows you to explore best practice and help improve client outcomes on a psychiatric unit. Your paper should describe how you, as a nurse, will include – or have included – cultural awareness in a client diagnosed with a mental illness. The person you describe could be someone in your clinical setting, someone you have worked with in the past, or a theoretical client. Remember that culture can also include gender equality, sexual orientation, and other cultures besides race and religion – including cultures unique to one particular family. Your paper should be at least 3 pages (double-spaced, not including the title or reference pages) in APA Format and include: Assessment: Discuss what you would assess in regard to a client’s culture. For example, are there specific dietary requirements? Are schedule changes necessary to avoid conflicts with religious practices? Who is the spokesperson for the family? What would you assess? Diagnosis: List any mental health nursing diagnoses this person has or may be at risk for. Include at least one cultural diagnosis. Planning: What planning needs to be done to ensure the cultural and emotional safety of the client? Implementation: What are interventions that would ensure the safety of your client in regard to culture? Include at least two interventions. For example, if your client has religious beliefs that affect the ability to take medications, what interventions would you create to ensure the client’s safety? What can you do to make sure the client’s cultural needs are met? Evaluation: How will you evaluate whether your implementation was effective? Make sure the parameters are objective and measurable. In your summary, discuss whether any completed interventions were successful. What could be done differently in the future? If the interventions have not yet been carried out, you might discuss some institutional changes that could be made to ensure cultural safety for all clients in that setting. Your paper should utilize proper APA guidelines and include at least three scholarly sources to support your paper. A scholarly source is a source that has been peer reviewed and has appropriate authors that are credentialed.

Use APA 6th Edition Format and support your work with at least 3 peer-reviewed references within 5 years of publication. Remember that you need a cover page and a reference page. Chronic Stable Angina E.H. is a 45-year-old African American man who recently moved to the community from another state. He requests renewal of a prescription for a calcium channel blocker, prescribed by a physician in the former state. He is unemployed and lives with a woman, their son, and the woman’s 2 children. His past medical history is remarkable for asthma and six “heart attacks” that he claims occurred because of a 25-year history of drug use (primarily cocaine). He states that he used drugs as recently as 2 weeks ago. He does not have any prior medical records with him. He claims that he has been having occasional periods of chest pain. He is unable to report the duration or pattern of the pain. Before proceeding, explore the following questions: What further information would you need to diagnose angina (substantiate your answer)? What is the connection between cocaine use and angina? Identify at least three tests that you would order to diagnose angina. Diagnosis: Angina 1. List specific goals of treatment for E.H. 2. What dietary and lifestyle changes should be recommended for this patient? 3. What drug therapy would you prescribe for E.H. and why? 4. How would you monitor for success in E.H.? 5. Describe one or two drug–drug or drug–food interactions for the selected agent. 6. List one or two adverse reactions for the selected agent that would cause you to change therapy. 7. What would be the choice for the second-line therapy? 8. Discuss specific patient education based on the prescribed first-line therapy. 9. What over-the-counter and/or alternative medications would be appropriate for E.H.?

This week’s discussion posts will somewhat mirror your paper assignment. It is a reflection to get you to share what is your personal philosophy of nursing? Your responses will be based on the four metaparadigms that are required for your paper.  Person/Client Environment Health Nursing When writing or responding, think about how and why you came to your insights. Evaluate your experiences, comment on ideas, how you feel, what did you learn? In your conclusion, you will restate your thoughts, ask others how they came to their ideas.

Using health information available from Healthy People, the CDC, and other relevant government websites, analyze the health status for this group. In a paper of 1,000-1,250 words, compare and contrast the health status of your selected minority group to the national average. Include the following: Describe the ethnic minority group selected. Describe the current health status of this group. How do race and ethnicity influence health for this group? What are the health disparities that exist for this group? What are the nutritional challenges for this group? Discuss the barriers to health for this group resulting from culture, socioeconomics, education, and sociopolitical factors. What health promotion activities are often practiced by this group?   Describe at least one approach using the three levels of health promotion prevention (primary, secondary, and tertiary) that is likely to be the most effective in a care plan given the unique needs of the minority group you have selected. Provide an explanation of why it might be the most effective choice. What cultural beliefs or practices must be considered when creating a care plan? What cultural theory or model would be best to support culturally competent health promotion for this population? Why? Cite at least three peer-reviewed or scholarly sources to complete this assignment. Sources should be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and public health content. Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide.

You will be researching a “Best Practice” in an area of nursing you are interested in. You will describe the best practice and why you chose it. You will also need to summarize the findings of your articles that relate to your best practice. You will need to explain how this best practice is relevant to new nurses and lastly, what is the nurse’s role in evidence-based practice and research. You need to use a minimum of 2 recent (within the last 3 years), peer-reviewed, scholarly articles that you include with your submission. Your paper must be 3-5 pages and follow APA formatting.
