The principle of negative reinforcement is discussed in terms of what it is and how it is both similar to, and different from, positive reinforcement. Escape and avoidance behaviors are discussed in terms of their association with negative reinforcement. How negative reinforcement can be used to produce desired and undesired behaviors is discussed, as is the ethical considerations involved in the use of negative reinforcement.

Chapter 4 in How to Think Like a Behavior Analyst: Understanding the Science that Can Change Your Life: “General Issues of Behavior”

Chapter 4 answers many of the questions budding behavior analysts and the public have about behavior analysis. The authors will discuss how behavior analysis is applied to groups, the importance of reinforcement histories; whether all behavior is learned; and replacing habit behaviors. It is an entertaining look at serious applied behavior analysis issues.

Television and film producers have editorial control over their media products; they control all aspects of the TV program and/or movie with the intent to impart a specific set of values to the viewing audience. This is especially true for character development. Certain characters are made to look attractive, smart, kind, generous, and altogether likeable. Others, less so. The characters, likeable or not, are automatically associated with their lifestyle choices and, importantly, the outcomes those choices produce. People tend to like the characters whose decisions lead to desirable outcomes. TV and film producers can develop characters whose appearance and lifestyle choices reinforce familiar stereotypes (e.g., the careerist female who, having forsaken marriage and children, seems destined to live a lonely life). In this way, TV and film producers convey messages about what kind of people we should aspire to be and what sort of lives we should aspire to live.

Theoharis focuses on a particular day in 2013 as embodying the issues surrounding the politicization of the memory of the civil rights movement. As a statue of Rosa Parks was being dedicated in the Capitol, the Supreme Court heard arguments in the case that would ultimately result in the overturning of major parts of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, with the reasoning that racism was a thing of the past. Theoharis argues that this intersection was “not merely ironic but emblematic of a larger politics of historical memory at work for a nation that wanted to place this history firmly in the past and diminish the vision of its heroes now put on pedestals.” (12)
