HA255: Human Resources for Healthcare Organizations

CLASSMATE POST #1

This week we are asked the two questions below:

How the need for quality employee training and development is related to a healthcare organization’s mission, vision and values?

Typically, job roles are defined by a job description that’s created to serve the purpose of supporting an organizations specific function. For instance, physicians would not work in a company that supplied durable medical equipment. Physicians typically work in healthcare facilities and a sales professional would work for a company that supplied medical equipment. However, both roles service the medical field or healthcare industry, but their job descriptions are company-specific.

Therefore, when HR professionals consider establishing training programs, they must design them in a way that the training aligns with an organization’s mission, vision, and values. For example, hospital facilities mission may be centered on patient care and satisfaction, whereas, a durable medical equipment company may focus on sales. Let’s assume a hospital facility just invested in a few MRI machines, certainly, clinical workers will need training on how to properly operate the new machinery. Or, let’s say new electronic medical records software system was just implemented facility-wide, training would be geared toward non-clinical workers such as admissions coordinators, schedulers, and patient documentation specialist.

Why is training so important?

Training is important because it increases job performance. Job performance and employee development are vital to the success of an organization because it helps the organization stay competitive and progress. Regular training gives employees the advantage to better maneuver through tough challenges in healthcare, break down communication barriers, increase access and remain qualified to deliver the best health outcomes. Also, with rapid integrated technology and healthcare policy, regular training prepares healthcare professionals with current necessary credentials needed to provide care and manage an organization.

CLASSMATE POST #2

Together, the vision, mission and values statements provide directions for everything that happens in an organization (Flynn, 2014). They usually keep everyone focused on where the organization is going and what it is trying to achieve (Flynn, 2014). They all define the core values of the organization and how people are expected to behave (Flynn, 2014). Development and training are very important in healthcare organizations to ensure the ongoing delivery of safe and competent care (Flynn, 2014). Training is a process where people gain their high potential and help the organization achieve its goals. Since the process is tied to a variety of organizational purposes, training can be viewed as specific or broader.

As a part of strategic competitiveness, employees whose capabilities stay current and who receive regular training are better able to cope with the challenges and changes occurring in healthcare (Flynn, 2014). The healthcare environment today with all the new technologies, web technology, and the increasing cost pressures without continuing training may not have staff members to provide care and manage the organization (Flynn, 2014).

Training and development can increase employee retention, job satisfaction, and productivity. Training is the tool super needed when implementing new policies, equipment, new employees, etc. Official training programs are an integral part of hiring new employees and integrating them into a company’s mission, vision, and values. There are far more consequences that come with the lack of training, especially in healthcare such as the data or privacy issues, inadequate documentation, compliance risks, patient safety risks, high turnover in staff, reduced employee productivity, legal issues, stress on management, and much more.

HI135: Legal Aspects of Health Information

CLASSMATE POST #3

During the reign of Barack Obama as president, 2008-2016, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was introduced. Signed into law, March 23, 2010, more commonly referred to as “Obamacare”, the Affordable Care Act affected MANY Americans. There were three categories of individuals affected by Obamacare: 1) the Grandfathered health insurance holders, 2) the Non-grandfathered health insurance holders, and 3) the uninsured Americans.

Grandfathered health insurance holders were able to keep their current insurance plans IF their insurance company stilCl offered the plan under the new standards of the Affordable Care Act. The Non-Grandfathered health insurance holders, which included individuals who purchased health insurance after March 23, 2010 had to enroll in a new plan to meet the standards of the Affordable Care Act. Uninsured individuals would be penalized if they met the criteria. The penalty for not having insurance for that fiscal year was as high as $695 or 2% of a person’s annual income. This penalty wounded many tax payers when it came to their annual tax refunds. They were not happy.

It is obvious that the Affordable Care Act encourage many Americans to purchase insurance because of the affordability and coverage, with low deductibles and cheap payments. Some pros of the Affordable Care Act is the slowing down of the rising of health care costs, the coverage of the 10 essential health benefits, coverage for pre existing conditions and the idea that children under the age of 26 were able to continue being on their parents health insurance. The biggest pro of Obamacare was that the middle class received tax credits on their premiums. This explained Medicaid to 138% of the federal poverty level, providing coverage for adults without children. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that it would reduce the budget deficit by $143 million by 2022, by reducing government’s health care costs, raising taxes on some businesses and higher income families, and shifting cost burdens to health care providers and pharmaceutical companies.

Some cons included the raised income tax rates and the taxing of those that didn’t purchase insurance. The pharmaceutical companies were greatly impacted because of having to pay extra to close the “doughnut hole” gap to cover the difference. Although 5 million people lost their employment-based health insurance, many businesses found it more cost effective to pay the penalty. (the balance, 2019)

Obamacare was a controversial topic during the presidency of Barack Obama, leaving both positive and negative effects on Americans. What was your stand on the Affordable Care Act? I was not affected by the tax penalty because of the minimal income I was making annually, but were you? Did your employment-based health insurance get cancelled? Did your insurance transfer over?

CLASSMATE POST #4

For this discussion I have chosen to the issues of access to healthcare for the uninsured. I decided to touch on this topic because I feel this issue effects a large population. The article from KFF.org mentions the lack of health insurance has been a steady issues in the united states. That’s where the idea to expand medicaid coverage for individual of low incoming and individuals below 400% poverty with marketplace subsides. The amount of people uninsured has increased continuously in 2 years straight. Children do not contribute much to the uninsured percentage; adults (non-elderly) are the majority with these percentages. I believe uninsured people have less medical care and timely care than an insured individual. I believe The Affordable Care Act ( ACA) helped the population a bit. A lot of people was not insured due to income; providing insurance for low-income has help this percentage I believe. It may differ for state to state and the resources people have access to.

Organizational Behavior Week 1 HRDV 5630

I need support with this Management question so I can learn better.

ANSWERS DO NOT HAVE TO BE EXCESSIVE. NO LONGER THAN 250 WORDS EACH.

  • 1.) Search the Internet for the websites of organization development and other management consultants. Try to find an explicit or implicit model of organization or organizational change that they recommend. How do these relate to the models presented in Chapter 4?
  • 2.) What are the differences between first-generation OD and second-generation OD? What are the major changes between these two generations of OD practice? What do you think have been the losses or gains in the second generation of OD practice?
  • 3.) Think about any past work experiences you have had and compare your experiences to the motivators and hygiene factors discussed in Herzberg’s theory. Do the factors that motivate you reflect what Herzberg found? Has motivation changed since Herzberg’s research? If so, how? Has what motivates you changed over time?
  • 4.) Consider “Example 3”, in Chapter 1, and answer the following questions:
  • What was the initial problem or area of opportunity for OD?
  • What did the practitioner do?
  • What were some of the problems or struggles along the way?
  • How does this example illustrate one or more of the definitions of OD listed in Chapter 1?

5.) At the text publishers Student Study Site read: Journal Article/Chapter 2 / Review Article: The past, present and future of organization development: Taking the long view (Links to an external site.) Bernard Burnes and Bill Cooke, Human Relations, November 2012; vol. 65, 11: pp. 1395-1429.

What are the key similarities and differences between OD as practiced in the 1970s and 1980s when compared to OD in 2000 and beyond

6.) Take a few moments to reflect on what you have learned in Week 1 of the course. Write a reflective paragraph summarizing your thoughts.

Unit 2 Discussion: Payment Models

Estimated time to complete: 2 hours

Please complete the following steps for your discussion post and response.

How should physicians be reimbursed for the care they provide? This highly-debated topic can be answered in a variety of ways, and no one answer fits all practice settings. Let’s take a deeper dive into this topic and investigate the financial impact of using productivity, quality, and financial measures to create a reimbursement structure.

A large family practice group is meeting to discuss restructuring their payment model. The practice has four physicians, each with a different patient population:

  • Dr. Andrews: large pediatric patient base, full-spectrum obstetrics/gynecology
  • Dr. Brown: geriatrics, disease management
  • Dr. Cascara: general family practice, cosmetic laser procedures
  • Dr. Dole: general family practice, low-risk obstetrics/gynecology

As the clinic manager, you play an active role in the daily implementation of managing the patient populations and ensuring accurate reimbursement is processed. The practice manager, Jane, has asked to meet with you to hear your thoughts on restructuring the physician payment model.

  • Compare and contrast the impact of using productivity measures among the four physicians. Briefly explaining which productivity measures could benefit each physician, and why.
  • Discuss how quality measures could be used to determine reimbursement. Which physicians would this currently benefit? Which might struggle in this area, and why? (Note: you will need to assume fictional information to form this response).

Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

Please review post and response expectations. Please review the rubric to ensure that your response meets criteria.

Cite any resources/references in APA formatting that were used in the discussion – if applicable.

Peer Responses/Participation

Please post 2 peer responses.

In the response post, include the following:

Assume the role of Jane, the practice manager. Respond to your classmate/clinic manager.

  • Based on the information provided by your clinic manager, describe the payment model you believe would benefit all parties involved (including the overall profitability of the practice).
  • If you disagree with the clinic manager, be sure to specifically say why, and provide an alternative solution.

Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

Please review post and response expectations. Please review the rubric to ensure that your response meets criteria.

Assignment: Marketing and Communication Techniques for Health Care Products

I’m trying to study for my Health & Medical course and I need some help to understand this question.

When selecting marketing and communication techniques, health care organizations must carefully examine their consumer populations, as not all techniques are effective for all consumers. Depending on the product, organizations might even choose two or three different techniques in an effort to reach multiple consumer segments. For this Assignment, you examine the consumer populations of your organization and create an advertisement using marketing and communication techniques appropriate for your consumers.

To prepare:

  • Select a health care product to market within your organization.

  • Identify the consumer population of your organization, including general and business consumer.
  • Consider traditional and/or contemporary marketing techniques that may be appropriate for your consumer population (i.e., brochure, flyer, video commercial, audio commercial, billboard, social media, etc.). Reflect on why you might select this technique and how you might use it to market the product.
  • With the marketing technique you select in mind, consider how you might create an advertisement to market the health care product and what communication techniques might be appropriate for your population.

The Assignment

Write a 2-page brief that addresses the following:

  • Describe the health care product you selected.
  • Analyze the consumer population of your health care organization.
  • Recommend a marketing technique that is appropriate for your consumer population (i.e., brochure, flyer, video commercial, audio commercial, billboard, social media, etc.). Include why you selected this technique and how you will use it to market the product you selected.
  • Recommend one or two communication techniques that are appropriate for the consumer population.

Then, create an advertisement using the marketing technique you selected. Be sure to utilize communication techniques that would be appropriate for the consumer population you identified.

Note: Your Assignment must be written in standard edited English. Be sure to support your work with at least five high-quality references, including two from peer-reviewed journals. See the Week 8 Assignment rubric for additional requirements related to research and scholarly writing.

I realize we live in a world that is constantly changing. Technology, societal norms, cultural changes and more require professionals to keep up by continuing their education and honing their craft. It is very important to stay current and relevant as it relates to your profession. A career that spans several decades will experience changes in trends, processes, policy, etc. We must all retool and stay on top of the last changes so that we remain effective, knowledgeable and efficient.

The video pointed out how professionalism is a necessity. I agree completely. We must conduct ourselves in a professional manner so that our client, students, colleagues, supervisors, etc. will respect us. I believe that a good leader leads by example. We must model the level of professionalism we expect. By presenting a good attitude, solid work ethic, a calm and patient demeanor, being loyal, honest and respectful will take you a long way. Those are characteristics that others respect and are drawn to. People are more willing to work with and for someone with those qualities. It is important that I exhibit those qualities every day. It doesn’t take a lot of work or effort for me because it is who I am and what I hope to find in others I work with.

I look forward to starting a career in student services or career development on a college campus. A position like that will allow me to apply my nearly 20 years of Human Resources and Workforce Development experience. It will also enable me to empower and guide young students in a direction that will help them become the most successful and productive professionals they can possibly be.

Please allow me to add this link to my post. Dr. Shirley talks about the importance of taking advantage of new opportunities and that our career development cycle never ends. As professional, we should always look for ways to improve and further our development.
