The Literature Review A literature review summarizes the current research/literature on a specific topic. It is the “state of the research”, and in its proper format, is appealing and accessible to practitioners/professionals and academics seeking timely information. Audience, Purpose, & Tone: You should presume your paper will be read by professionals and academics in the social sciences and related fields. For this reason, sources must consist only of academic peer reviewed work (scholarly articles from peer reviewed journals in the field), and the writing should be formal, free of contractions, slang words or phrases, and presumptions that are not based on research evidence. The paper will be written in the third person narrative (no “I”, “you”, or “we” statements); there should be no hypothetical questions contained therein, only objective facts and conclusions. The purpose of this particular paper is to synthesize the research from varied disciplines so to draw conclusions as to the state of research (“bigger picture”) on your topic. General Formatting: Papers must be written using Microsoft Word (no pdf or other file formats will be accepted/graded by the instructor); students must follow APA style (7th edition) and required formatting guidelines.
