DESCRIPTION.  As the final written assignment for EDU 102 I am asking you to think deeply about the ‘foundations of education’ – the title of this course. You are being asked to do this by Crafting a written response that answers the following question(s): What is/are the foundations of education? Why did we study the topics that we did? For that matter, what was this course about? (In my mind this is actually one question – you may agree / disagree – it all depends upon how you “see” it.) Your response should not be less than 1,750 words, nor should it be more than 2,000 words. (please use word count to ensure that your response is the appropriate length). If it helps – this final assignment is about 700 words in length. The following terms / concepts must be included in bold & underlined in your response. Please keep the following in mind: This should NOT be considered an opportunity for you to use recall and tell me everything you think you know or remember from this course – as that it the lowest level of intellectual functioning according to Bloom’s taxonomy (remembering). Instead this assignment should be an opportunity for you to consolidate and add to your understandings. Therefore, do not simply tell me everything you think you know right now. Instead, begin by reviewing your class notes, and then your course readings. When appropriate refer to outside sources to fill in gaps in your current understandings. I encourage you to discuss your response with your peers / colleagues. However, I ask that you write your final written response individually. Other ideas to keep in mind: Do NOT cite class notes – find / cite the original source. Include a complete reference list at the end. The reference list is not to be included in the word count. APA is required for BOTH the in text cites and the reference list. Please read and follow the instruction carefully: The history of higher education is complex and the result of economics, student migration, policies, and efforts to limit or create access to institutions. If two ideas are in conflict, it is impossible to support them both. A thesis statement should never be so broad that it’s difficult to discuss all of the relevant information. A thesis statement is an assertion that requires evidence and support, not a universally agreed-upon fact or an observation. A thesis is the main idea, not the title. It must be a complete sentence that expresses in some detail what claim you plan to support. A thesis statement has one main point rather than several main points. More than one point may be too difficult for the reader to understand and the writer to support. A thesis statement is narrow, rather than broad. If the thesis statement is sufficiently narrow, it can be fully supported. Persuasive Essay Outline: Introduction paragraph: Get the reader’s attention by using a “hook”. Pull your audience in! Anecdote, fact, something interesting to start essay Provide some brief background information about the direction of your topic. Explain what the topic is and why it is controversial or important to you. For example, if the focus of your essay is on the economic benefits of higher education, provide me with some background about how higher education impacts economics conditions. If your essay is about diversity, provide me with some background information about diversity as it relates to higher education. Thesis or focus statement – don’t forget to underline (Typically included as the last sentence of your introduction paragraph). This is a sentence stating your opinion about the topic and will be proven in the rest of your essay with at least 3 strong reasons and support. See Week 10 presentation for thesis guidelines Body Paragraphs (At minimum, you should have 3 body paragraphs): 1st Body Paragraph: First argument or reason to support your position Topic sentence explaining your first reason (see notes below on topic sentences)  Provide support/evidence to prove your first reason. Bring in facts, data, examples, etc. from the course reading. Be sure to correctly utilize in-text citations (MLA/APA) and rephrase quotations. 2nd Body Paragraph: Second argument or reason to support your position. Topic sentence explaining your second reason.  Provide support/evidence to prove your second reason. Bring in facts, data, examples, etc. from the course reading 3rd Body Paragraph: Counter argument and third reason to support position. (A counter argument paragraph is optional, however highly recommended, so that the reader will know you have considered another point of view and have a rebuttal to it.) State what the other side believes or may argue Example: Some may argue _______________ Challenge their argument with your third reason and provide support. Give support such as facts, data, examples, etc. explaining why your argument is stronger than the counter argument Conclusion Paragraph: Sum up your main points and 3 (or more) reasons. Restate your thesis.  Final words: last comments or call to action. Encourage the reader to agree with you. Bibliography/References Page Required Citations: You must properly integrate a minimum of 6 class sources (i.e. lectures, readings, discussions section meetings, videos, etc.) At least 3 of your 6 sources should come from the course readings. There is no limit on how many outside the classroom sources can be incorporated into your paper. Utilizing quotes: Step One: Introduce the quotation, paraphrasing in your own words is highly encouraged. Cite correctly. Step Two: Explain what the author is arguing in the quotation. (The author should agree with how you sum up the quotation – this will help you establish credibility, by demonstrating that you do know what the author is saying even if you don’t agree.) Step Three: State the implications of the quotation for your own argument. (What do you make of the author’s argument?) Topic Sentences: A topic sentence should encapsulate and organize an entire paragraph. When creating a topic sentence, ask yourself what’s going on in your paragraph.  Why have you chosen to include the information you have? Why is the paragraph important in the context of your argument or thesis statement?  What point are you trying to make?  It should be noted that relating your topic sentences to your thesis can help strengthen the coherence of your essay. Use a topic sentence to show how your paragraph contributes to the development of your argument by moving it that one extra step forward.

In the Districts and Schools section of this website you can find one of these schools under the Baltimore city District, and click on one of them to find the statistics.  Part 1: The infographic Poster  Using Canva.com, you will create an infographic that ”tells the story” of one school. The point of infographics is to tell a story using numbers and images. The clearer the infographic, the better. What story about the school do you want to tell?  On the infographic you need to explain:  ? Who are the students attending the school? ? How are students performing at school? ? What is the school’s neighbourhood like?  To answer these questions use the statistics you found on the first website, and use statistics from these two websites: Baltimore Neighborhoods Indicators Alliance https://bniajfi.org  Baltimore City Schools (with more of the Maryland state data including satisfaction survey) https://www.baltimorecityschools.org  Your infographic poster must include the following:  ? the name of the school and the name of the neighbourhood ? a correlation, ratio or average that you calculated using Excel ? at least two different types of graphs ? no fewer than 7 numbers or quantitative measurements   When complete download the file from canva.com as a .jpg file and attached it separately from the word document to the file section of the order.  Part II: ”The Experts say” (This part is written in a word document)  Think about the story the infographic tells. What are some factors that affect this school’s academic performance? To complement this information you at least 4 sources from the file section order of this order. There’s a word document with links to videos and one article that could be useful as well.  In approximately 500 words, present expert opinions that help explain the story that you have presented in your infographic. Plan to present the findings from at least two of the articles or experts in the videos from the word document in the file section. For example, if you point out that x % of children come from homes living below the poverty line, what evidence can you point to from the experts that makes a relationship between poverty and academic success? (this is just a suggestion do not use this example on the final project). You should be putting numbers and quotations in context with full sentences. As well, you should include some type of graph/display that you describe in full sentences.  Citations: Use the APA format for in-text references, and cite the graphs appropriately.  References: Include the references of the articles you used in a works cited section.  Part III: Produce a one page profile (~300 words) that uses a character or situation from The Wire (season 4) that exemplifies what you have been talking about in Parts I & II. The characters you can choose from are Michael Lee, Duckie Duquan Weems, Namond Brice, Randy Wagstaff or Roland Przybewski. To continue with the example of the relationship between poverty and academic success, you might want to discuss what happened with Duquan throughout the show. You could begin by explaining his situation at the beginning of the show and then how it improved and then deteriorated as the show went on, highlighting the way poverty dictated so many of his decisions. (This just a suggestion do not use this example in the final project).  Submission: Submit parts 2 and 3 in the word document and part 1 separately as a .jpg file in the file section of this order.

The Value Of College
