You will submit an electronic journal of written reflections tied to your readings to help you clarify and define your philosophy and theory of classroom management and assist you in developing and organizing your personal discipline system. You will record and reflect on favorite ideas from the approaches to discipline presented in the text and from other sources. Your reflective journal will also be a means for highlighting issues, viewpoints, and/or online discussions related to your area of expertise. This is not a time to directly answer the thinking questions PROVIDED IN MODULE 4, but rather to synthesize the information provided (cite the text and outside resources using APA).  You must write in paragraphs using appropriate grammar and spelling. Proof-read your work carefully! [guidelines: 200-400 words minimum]  In order to synthesize the information you read, you should talk about the similarities and differences between the “Discipline Authorities” rather than one at a time. What do they have in common? How are they different? How can you apply the thinking in your own classroom? What stands out and why? I am looking for you to dig deep into your soul to change the lives of students! Make sure you “SYNTHESIZE” in your post! (You will lose 2 points on every post if you do not SYNTHESIZE the content you read!!) Respond to classmates in your group using AND CITING examples from the text.  Make sure you explain and cite your examples.

The purpose of these observations is to help students become familiar with various special education support services within schools.  This includes classrooms designated as resource, self-contained, inclusion and general education.  Due to the recent closings of schools, you will be watching videos of classroom observations published by school districts and other learning institutions for the purpose of teacher training. You will be assigned a small study group with 2 other classmates to discuss, collaborate and support one another throughout the course and on these final assignments.   While these videos won’t replace the invaluable experience of spending time in classroom settings, they will allow for a taste of different teaching styles and student learning needs. You are encouraged to view these with a lens of constructive encouragement/criticism.  The final three projects for this course in Module 9 will be based on your observations of these videos. Part A: 1 Hour Classroom Video Observations , 3 Summaries, Group Discussion Summary Students will view observation videos in at least 3 different classroom settings (resource, self-contained, inclusion, general education) as well as at least 1 of the provided TED talks. (See Video Resource List below) You are required to take independent observation notes for each video you select as a group.  You will be focusing on teaching style, student engagement, and the classroom environment.  Once you have shared your observation notes with your group (via google docs, zoom, etc) each group member will create a summary for 3 videos depicting 3 classroom settings (self-contained, resource, and inclusion).   You do not have to write a summary for every video viewed, just 3 classroom types.  These observation summaries will be posted in the In-Depth Study drop box.  A Summary of the group discussion and process will be posted in the In-Depth Study drop box by each member of the group.  Post your summary in the In Depth Study Drop Box. Part B: IEP Analysis The IEP component of this assignment is meant to familiarize you with IEP’s and the IEP process.  While we would typically have you review a student’s IEP at your observation site, you will still have the opportunity to explore the components of an IEP.  Choose and review one of the following videos to get a feel for an IEP meeting. You will compare/contrast an inclusion classroom to a special education classroom (self-contained, resource, low incidence/other disabilities classroom (K-12).   As you compare and contrast these 2 classroom settings in your group discussions, identify how each classroom supports students with disabilities and if there are areas that need improvement.   Even though you will discuss your findings and observations with your group, each group member will write their own three to five page paper that addresses the following topics for each classroom.   1) Introduction: Two classrooms that are to be observed Include classroom type, grade, number of students, types of disabilities seen in the classroom and any environmental descriptors about the classroom. 2) Describe any adaptations and accommodations observed (supports for students with disabilities) 3) Describe any behavior management or techniques observed 4) Personal Impressions/Critique (of methods and practices observed) 5) Observations related to class and readings (Include at least 5 things). In order to persuade the audience to accept the position you are advocating in this paper you will use different kinds of appeals:• ethos (which involves the credibility of the speaker, writer, or authority being cited);• logos (which involves facts, statistics, and logic); and• pathos (which involves emotions).A good persuasive argument uses credible sources, objective evidence, and emotional “hooks” to make use of logos, ethos, and pathos respectively.Be sure your thesis statement is very clear. This will be the individual whose philosophy of education and application of that philosophy you will explore in the upcoming Philosopher Analysis Assignment. ·         Historical Topic: You have a great deal of latitude in proposing a topic for the Historical Topic Analysis Assignment, but it must be relevant to the foundations of education—philosophically, sociologically, politically, culturally, etc. Your topic should focus more on a historical event or movement rather than on individuals. Ideally, you should consider the historical aspects of a topic you already have in mind for your upcoming dissertation or capstone project. If you do not yet have an idea for the dissertation or capstone, you may do the following to decide on a topic: o   Review the table of contents and the index of the textbook. o   Skim through textbook chapters to get ideas from the list of key terms, bold words, and images. o   Read the Reflection questions at the end of each chapter.  Topics may be events, educational movements, laws, court decisions, trends, developments, etc. Topics may or may not be found in the textbook. Be as specific in your topic selection as possible. For instance, instead of studying something broad like “medieval education,” narrow it to “emergence of universities in the Middle Ages” or “methods of teaching in medieval Scholasticism.” Watch the 3-minute video on How to Narrow a Research Topic by considering time, location, category, and issue.   Two Research Questions: Insert a research question into the template for each of your topics. Watch the 4-minute video on Developing a Research Question. The research question should be clear, focused, and concise. However, it should be complex enough that it is not answerable with a simple yes or no, but rather requires synthesis and analysis of ideas and sources prior to composition of an answer.   Two References: List a journal article reference in APA format for each topic. The article title should be relevant to the corresponding topic and research question.   ·         Reference Format: You need only to list the reference with proper APA format (see APA Format Quick Guide), including hanging indention, proper capitalization, italicization, punctuation, etc. You need not write anything about the article. The purpose is to get you started in selecting articles and to practice APA reference format for journal articles. ·         Databases: Search the Jerry Falwell Library Education Databases of journals on the topic of education. You may want to begin with Academic Search Ultimate or Education Research Complete. Ensure that the articles are from professional, academic journals. Avoid searching for articles using generic search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo!, etc.
