It has been said that society itself is a victim of many crimes. Please discuss what this means to you. You may want to discuss how crime affects you, your family, and ultimately society…Be prepared to back up any statements you make.

You will be writing an argumentative essay on a topic of your choice. The topic you choose must be debatable and you must take a clear stand on one side of the issue. Your topic must also be on a small enough scale that it is appropriately narrow for a 3-5 page essay. Your essay must include a title, an introductory paragraph, which contains your argumentative thesis statement, at least three body paragraphs, which provide support for your argument and a conclusion paragraph. Research from at least two outside sources is required to provide evidence and support for your argument. Research must be cited using APA style. You must include a reference page, which lists the specific sources you used and properly cite the sources within your essay. An example essay is provided below for reference. Please read this before writing your essay. In order to foster learning and growth, all essays you submit must be newly written specifically for this course. Any recycled work will be sent back with a 0, and you will be given one attempt to redo the touchstone. Choosing a Topic You may choose any topic you wish as long as the topic has two clear sides and is not agreed upon by most of society. Your topic should be current and should have a narrow focus appropriate for a 3-5 page essay.  Essay Guidelines Refer to the checklist below throughout the writing process. Do not submit your Touchstone until your essay meets all guidelines.  We also suggest reading the complete sample essay before you begin writing. Argumentative Thesis Statement and Focus Does the topic of the argument have two clear sides? Do you take a clear position on the argument in your thesis statement? Is the topic appropriately narrow for a 3-5 page essay? Development and Support Are all details relevant to the argumentative thesis statement? Is your position supported through use of rhetorical appeals? Is your position supported through evidence? Essay Structure and Organization Does your essay have an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement? Does your essay have at least three body paragraphs, which support your thesis statement? Does your essay have a conclusion paragraph that wraps up the essay? Are the essay paragraphs logically sequenced? Have you used transitions to connect ideas between sentences and paragraphs? Is it easy to follow the argument? Style Have you checked your essay for redundancies and imprecise language? Does your essay employ a formal style and objective tone? Sources and Citations Have you referenced at least two outside sources as evidence for your argument? Are your sources current and credible? Have you properly cited the sources using APA style within your essay and included a reference page? Conventions Have you checked your essay for grammatical errors? Have you used Spell-Check or another method to check spelling? Have you used punctuation correctly? Have you checked your essay for sentence run-ons and sentence fragments? Reflection Have you answered all of the reflection questions thoughtfully and thoroughly?  Are your answers to the reflection questions included on a separate page below your essay? Have you met or exceeded the required length for each reflection response? Before You Submit Have you given your essay a title? Have you included your name, date, and course at the top left of the page? Is your essay between 3-5 pages (1,000-1,500 words)? Reflection Questions How did your purpose and audience shape the way in which you wrote your argument? (1-2 sentences) What was the most difficult part of writing your argumentative essay? (2-3 sentences) Which appeals did you use and how do you think they strengthened your argument? (3-4 sentences) How has your understanding of argumentative writing changed after completing this unit? (2-3 sentences) Scoring Your composition and reflection will be scored according to the Touchstone 2 Rubric, which considers your essay structure, essay organization, argumentative claim and focus, development and support for your argument, style and conventions.

This essay explores the persuasive mode, one of the more common kinds of writing you’ll experience throughout your college and professional career. Your goal is to persuade your audience to consider your position on a controversial, two-sided subject. This five paragraph persuasive essay (introduction, 3 body paragraphs and a conclusion) is made up of the following: ·        A clear persuasive thesis statement in the first paragraph after the topic is introduced and the importance of the issue is clear to the reader ·        Logical transitions between the into, the body, and the conclusion ·        Body paragraphs that support the persuasive thesis with evidence as well as address the opposing viewpoints ·        A conclusion that wraps up all the information presented in the body Utilize your pre-writing and outlining strategies from week two to help you organize and plan your essay. It is not required to have research and source material for this essay, though it can greatly help support your argument. Using sources shows how your ideas build upon the ideas of previous writers and why your claims merit consideration — because they are supported by credible experts in their field. If you do use source material from the EBSCO library or any other source such as an online source or a hard copy source, please give credit to the author with in-text citations and a references page using APA formatting. Criteria The rough draft of your essay should contain the following basic features: ·        A well-defined issue that is controversial by nature ·        A clear thesis statement that demonstrates the position you will be taking throughout the essay ·        A counter argument defending the opposing viewpoint ·        A refutation to or compromise with the counter argument  In addition to the above, the rough draft of your essay should be: ·        From 500 to 800 words in length, double-spaced, with one inch margins ·        Written primarily in third person ·        Edited for spelling, mechanical, grammatical, and typing errors

Analyze Cullen Bryant’s “Thanatopsis” and (similar) his theme of death with that of Ann Bradstreet’s (covered in the fall semester compare) “Upon the Burning of Our House”. #1- Discuss/compare how they personally see death. Do they have/share the same vision of death? Be sure to use direct quotations from both Bradstreet’s poem and Bryant’s to support your analysis. Paragraph #2- How do they say about death in their works? (2 quotations, one from “Thanatopsis” & one from Bradstreet’s poem.)

This essay must be 1000 to 1200 words in length (not including the Works Cited Page).  We make evaluations every day. From the clothes we wear, to the cars we drive, to the food we eat, to the beliefs we ascribe to, we make decisions (when not constrained) based on a set of criteria. We may not always know why we like a thing or not, but the criteria are always there, even if subconsciously. In a 1000 to 1200 word essay (that strictly follows the formatting guidelines contained in the course syllabus), evaluate a person, place, object, artform, or idea. Anything can be evaluated, and I am giving you latitude on your topic. To meet the expectations of the assignment, your essay should contain a thesis, a set of clearly outlined criteria, a logical structure that moves coherently from one point to the next (with seamless transitions), a counterargument that concedes and refutes opposing evaluations, and a conclusion. As with all the essays in this course, I expect you to provide well selected evidence that justifies your evaluation. Essays that rely on solely on opinion without well integrated and analyzed evidence that meets the burdens of proof, will not comply with the expectations of the assignment. When selecting your topic, endeavor to narrow it down. If, for example, you want to evaluate Disney Corp., you will find it easier to cut that massive elephant into chunks. You might decide that you want to evaluate Disney’s movies, theme parks, or marketing strategies. Narrowing down your topic will enable you to traffic in the specific details and analyses that are the hallmarks of strong writing and critical thought. Finally, you will find it useful to create context by comparing your object of inquiry to similarly categorized things. If, per the example used in class, you were to evaluate pizza, you would want to break that broad category into chunks for more precise analysis. One, for example, would not want to use microwaveable Hot Pockets as a benchmark for evaluating the pies of nationally renowned outfits like Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix, Arizona, or Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven, Connecticut. Have fun with this project, and I look forward to reading what you come up with. Attached below is the rubric for Essay 4, “Justifying an Evaluation.” Consider looking it over as you begin composing your drafts.
