“Macomber” research paper   After a careful reading of Hemingway’s short story, “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” available on Moodle, write a research paper answering the following question:   Do you believe that Margot shoots her husband on purpose or that it was a terrible and unfortunate accident?     Paper Details: ü  The length of the paper is 5-6 pages not including Works Cited page. ü  This paper needs to be in MLA format: font 12, 1 inch margin all around, double space, no extra spaces between paragraphs, insert the page number and your last name at the top right of each page along with the header we have been using for papers and assignments. ü  You will need to cite the story using the author’s last name and page number when you quote. ü  You will need to use at 2-3 additional sources that you will find on your own during the research process.

Write an evidence-driven critical essay in which you analyze a theme from Chuck Palahniuk’s “Loser”. You will be addressing how the literary elements complement or support the theme of that assigned story (this is essentially using New Criticism, so you may find it helpful to go back to previous lecture pages).So, you will need to provide quotes that deepen your audience’s understanding of the text and provide context when you incorporate them into your writing. Your analysis should be debatable and bring something not obvious to a reader upon a first or second reading. Consider doing a bit of research to broaden your knowledge base regarding the historical context that influences the assigned short story. Your final draft should be at least five paragraphs (no word count limit or max), include “Loser” as a source as well as at least one other outside source, appropriate in-text citations, and a Works Cited page.

In his article “Black Men and Public Space” by Brent Staples states that “being perceived as dangerous is a hazard in itself and further states that “Where fear and weapons meet … there is always the possibility of death” (395). Explain what he means by these statements using evidence from his essay and from events in the USA today. Multi-media Reflections Writing Consider the following questions as you write a one-page reflection on your experience in doing the multi-media presentation & in hearing the presentations that others gave to the class.  What is one significant thing you learned about yourself throughout this unit and by writing the personal philosophy statement? How will what you learned be relevant to you now or in the future?  What did you learn about the process of doing an oral presentation, if anything? Will this knowledge be of help to you now or in the future, & if so, in what way? What did you learn by sharing your presentation with others?  Did sharing your thoughts with the class allow you to improve yourself in any way? What did you learn from someone else by listening to his/her presentation?  Did you gain insight into a different way of thinking? Did you learn anything from someone else’s presentation that you found impressive or interesting or inspired you to be empathetic? Would you evaluate the multi-media process as valuable in any way?  Explain why or why not.

DOCUMENTARY PROPOSAL For this assignment, you will create a proposal for a hypothetical documentary. You must choose the topic and approach. This project is a practical way to demonstrate your knowledge of the course content from this semester. ASSIGNMENT DETAILS 1. Documentary Topic This can be any topic. It does not have to be practical. For example, if you wanted to make a documentary about yak herders in Tibet or a biographical documentary about a celebrity, those topics would not be easy to get access to. But you’re still free to pick those or any other feasible topic. On the other hand, if you’re an aspiring filmmaker who would like to use this as an actual plan for a future film, please feel free! 2. Documentary Thesis If your documentary is making an argument (ie, 13th or The Thin Blue Line), the thesis will be your documentary’s argument. If your documentary does not make overt arguments (ie, Baraka or Gimme Shelter), the thesis can what you hope this documentary will achieve. For both approaches to the thesis, you should also explain why you think the argument or goal of the documentary is important or significant. 3. Documentary Mode Pick one documentary mode for your project. (Many contemporary documentaries mix the modes, but I would like you to pick one dominant mode.) Justify in detail why you think this mode is the correct choice for your topic. This justification should specify what your mode will achieve that the others cannot. If you would strongly like to propose a mixed mode documentary, come talk to me and I’ll decide if an exception can be made. 4. Documentary Models Pick 3-4 documentaries that would be models, in some way, for your documentary. These models can offer any type of inspiration – the visual style of one documentary, the editing style of another, maybe something about one scene in a documentary, or one interview subject, or one shot, etc. Just as long as some detail, big or small, is giving you inspiration. These models do not necessarily have to be in the same mode as your documentary proposal, although 1 or 2 examples probably should be. 5. Documentary Details The details of a documentary will vary depending on topic and mode. Some will require newly shot footage; some will only need stock footage; some will focus on 1-2 social actors; some will require a multitude of social actors; etc. Please explain all the details of your documentary proposal: Who are the social actors? (if applicable) What kind of footage will be required? What style of voice over? Voice of god or more casual? Single or multiple narrators? (if applicable) What will the shooting locations be? (if applicable) What kind of crew do you think will be necessary? (if applicable) What type of visual style? (Nature photography? Formal studio interviews? Fly on the wall? Staged recreations?) (if applicable) What type of editing style? (Observational, Expository, and Poetic would all be edited differently, for example.) 6. Ethical Considerations What are the ethical considerations for your topic and mode? There were many ethical questions raised in class and in the textbook, so I would recommend going over those questions and seeing which ones might apply to your project.   PAPER FORMAT 4-5 pages in length Follow the same format as the previous written assignments (Times New Roman 12pt font, 1-inch paper margins, paper details in single space at the top, paper body double spaced) You do not need to write an introduction. This is more similar to a report than a research paper. You may simply begin with what your documentary topic will be. A paper will receive full points if it covers all of the issues listed in “Assignment Details” in a thorough and thoughtful manner, using specific examples to illustrate you choices.

Book Review: The Devil in Silicon Valley In this assignment you are invited to “think” and “work” like a critical, politically engaged scholar. In order to acquaint you with the tasks, skills, and motivations required of serious academic work, you are expected to critically evaluate a short work by an author or public intellectual who engage issues of race and racial formation as well as other social exclusions related to the ethnic Mexican experience. Scholarly reviews are short; usually six hundred to two thousand words and typically assess only one book. A review summarizes the author’s argument and assesses his or her success in presenting it. In addition to evaluating the author’s claim, the review also examines the author’s organization, use of evidence, and conclusions. A well crafted review links the critique of the author’s claims to major debates in a specific field, e.g. Ethnic Studies. A critical review does not re-narrate a book. Make sure to judge or evaluate the book you have selected and not the one you would have preferred had been written! Does the text you selected deliver what it promised at the outset? Your appraisal should be supported by details or evidence found in the book when appropriate, accurately quoting from the text only when necessary to support your critique. Reviews of this sort do not use footnotes or endnotes –if you do quote the author simply indicate the page number in parenthesis at the end of the quotation. Begin your book review by listing the book under review, including the author, title, publication information (location of publication, publisher, date), and the elements of the book (number of pages, maps, illustrations, notes, bibliography, and index).

Create an argument for or against the idea that we, as human beings, should subscribe to a regime of discipline and obedience. Your argument can utilize any field as a lens of analysis, i.e., psychology, anthropology, sociology, literary criticism such as feminism, etc.). If you are struggling to understand how to write in an argument form, consider what it means to debate. Does your thesis have an opposite side that can be debated? For example, if you were writing a thesis that Frankenstein was written as a character who suffered from trauma, you would ask yourself if someone could argue the opposite “Frankenstein is a character whose personality was not formed by trauma but by…x..y..or z.” If you always approach your thesis in this manner, as if you are creating an argumentative topic for a debate
