In the book review you are required to provide both a description and an evaluation of an autobiographical account of your choice that we have NOT discussed in class and which addresses the rule of the Khmer Rouge and/or its aftermath. There are many sources, such as , available that list memoirs and autobiographies you might want to select. The book review should focus on the book’s purpose, contents, and authority. When writing the book review keep a reader in mind that does not know anything about the history of the Khmer Rouge or the book you discuss.

Competitiveness, worship of education and science, jealousy, and the mistreatment of women are elements in this very modern tale. Discuss how these elements destroyed Beatrice. Use material from the story to show that she was mistreated and comment further either on the plight of women or comment on the problems associated with the worship of education. Write an essay about winning being everything or winning not being everything. Discuss Rappaccini’s rivalry with Baglioni. You must use as examples elements from the story “Rappaccini’s Daughter.” Be sure to quote from the story. Show how Baglioni tries to out do Rappaccini. Why was Baglioni jealous ? Was he jealous of Rappaccini’s achievements ?

“Read “Consider the Lobster” to analyze how the author maneuvers around attitudes towards consuming meats. That he does so before an audience of Gourmet, an audience that may not wish to address the issue, represents quite an audacious move. He writes that he is genuinely “confused” about what his position ought to be.
