Now that you’ve written your draft, what concepts or ideas from the readings (Malcolm X, Sedaris, Barrientos, and/or Alexie) did you apply to your own narrative draft? In the world of digital technology where virtual reality can be more real than the physical world and where smartphones can be used to measure and monitor every aspect of our lives, the question of privacy and civil rights becomes a serious discussion.  This topic becomes paramount when colleges and universities use digital tracking under the guise of concern for and protection of their students.  Topic Is digital tracking of students truly useful or a violation of a student’s privacy and civil rights? In this first assignment, you are tasked with creating your own literacy narrative. You can look at a particular moment in your life when the power of words spoke to you (pun intended), or look at your relationship with words. Take into account your personal narrative… your upbringing and background, your education, which speakers, academics, or artists you admire and how they use their platform to utilize their voices. This piece can be political, can be emotional, or can simply be reflective. It could be positive or negative, it simply has to be authentic.

For this activity you will: 1. State your Research Topic, Objective/Purpose, and Research Question(s). Research Topic: The economic impact of Corona Virus Research Objective: To analyze the ways that the economy has either improved or deteriorated  Research Questions: How has the coronavirus pandemic affected the economies of the word? Are there countries that have suffered more losses than others due to the pandemic, or are all countries affected similarly? How can the effects of the illness be addressed based on level impact?  2. List and label the dependent and independent variables. 3. State the null and alternate hypotheses. 4. Describe which quantitative methods could be used to address your research question(s). Describe any that could be applied. 5. Explain which would be the most appropriate and why. 6. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of the method you select.

ASSIGNMENT: As you learned in this unit, a Rogerian argument is one that presents two sides of a debate and argues for a solution that will satisfy both sides. Given two articles presenting opposing sides of an issue (mandatory uniforms in schools), construct your own 2-3 page Rogerian argument essay in which you attempt to arrive at a workable solution or “middle ground.”

This first essay is a memoir that focuses on a defining event in your life, something that has shaped you in important ways. A memoir is autobiographical in that it is a story about your life told from your point of view, but it focuses on a specific period or event rather than spanning a lifetime as other autobiographical narratives can do. This personal story might touch on a defining event that was joyful or difficult or eye-opening. It might be something that happened to you in a familiar or unfamiliar setting, with family or friends or people you didn’t know. You’ll prepare this essay to read to a small group in class in Week 2. THIS IS A LOW-STAKES ASSIGNMENT and will be graded simply as no credit or full credit.  It’s more about getting ideas on paper and having something to share in Week 2.  Nevertheless, it should be complete with fully developed sentences and organized paragraphs.  It will be rewritten in the 2nd half of the course.  Maximum length : two pages typed, double-spaced. Use any event from childhood or a job of some sort. Please make this appropriate and choose a positive topic. You may write a story!

Your essay should conform to these guidelines: • Be a minimum of 500 words • Be written in a readable, 12 pt. font • Have a title that is inviting to your readers (your classmates) • Identify and discuss a specific piece of media important to you • Identify and discuss a specific value you hold that this media has helped to shape • Use specific details, including personal experiences, to explore the relationship between this media and this value • Show a degree of analysis (that is, it does not just describe, but reflects on and analyzes your experiences or the media you’re discussing) • Be effectively organized, use clear language, and be carefully edited

What will they want to know?  What is their purpose in reading my article? How can I build their understanding of my topic in a compelling way?  (Think about writing strategies, use of support, etc.) What might my readers be skeptical about?  How will I handle this skepticism?  What choices can I make in terms of style, tone, and word choice to connect with my readers? ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS: Label the Word document with Part I and Part II and use paragraph formatting rather than bullet points.  The questions provided are intended to guide your responses.  Note paragraph length requirements above. Use 12-point Times New Roman font and double space.  A title page, running heads, and an abstract are not required. Document any researched information or direct quotes in APA style.
