1) Watch the Video in this Module “5 Tips to Improve Critical Thinking.” Select one (1) problem or one (1) goal you have this fall semester. Apply the 5 Tips to that goal or problem. Give specific examples.   Include 2-3 quotes from the video.  Your quotes should not be “floating,” but should be integrated into your sentence. Example of a floating quote: “There is a solution” (Roberts). Here is an example of an integrated quote: Although it will take much time and effort, Wilson Roberts claims “there is a solution.” Cite the video at the bottom of the assignment, MLA style.  Your answer should be a minimum of 500 words.

Poetry analysis is not really as scary as it may seem.  When reading the poems, pay attention to the poetic conventions that really stand out: voice (speaker in the poem) word choice, or word order imagery figures of speech (simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, understatement, metonymy, synecdoche, apostrophe) sound (rhythm, rhyme, assonance, alliteration, consonance) form symbolism, allegory, myth theme All of these aspects help to create meaning for the reader.  Which rhetorical element creates the greatest meaning?  Which did you understand the best? That is the element that you will want to address in your analysis essay. The analysis essay does not require outside research.  As a matter of fact, please avoid using outside sources (these usually cause issues with plagiarism in the essays). The analysis essay is merely a “reader response” essay.  State your claims about the text using only evidence from the poem to support your points.  in-text citations for poems should include the line numbers only. Quotes from poems use slashes to indicate line breaks in the original poem.  Do not type it as you see it on the page: As an example, William Carlos Williams writes, “so much depends/ upon” (1-2). The essay only needs to be about two pages in length. *All essays must be formal, so do not use 1st or 2nd person or contractions.  And, the essay should have a Work Cited page with only the poem listed. The author’s full name and the title of the poem should be in the introductory paragraph. (Titles of poems should be in quotation marks, not italics unless an extraordinarily long poem: Beowulf.) Write an essay of 500-750 words on the use of a single literary device/term used within one of the poems you read for this lesson. Be sure to:  Include an outline. Use MLA format. Include a Works Cited page, listing the poem you used. Review the format for citing lines of poetry. Citations from the poem will be needed to support your argument.

Use Google (or other search engine of your choice), and do keyword searches for your topic, reading a few of the sources you find. Then, respond with the following information: The topic is The Cuban Government and Poverty What keywords did you enter? Which keywords seemed to yield the best results? Which types of sources were you able to find (e.g., websites, articles, blogs, etc.)? Identify one source that seemed to be the strongest, and describe what is most useful or interesting about the source. Cite any borrowed material using APA style formatting.

Now, in one page, respond in two paragraphs. In your first paragraph, briefly introduce Courtney Martin and summarize what you see as the main idea or ideas of her talk, using a few examples to illustrate her points. In your second paragraph, make tell us what you think. Use a few (not all!) of the following questions to shape your response: Do you agree with her assessment of today’s American Dream? Does it align with your dreams and expectations? Do you like the sound of her solution or does it sound fishy to you? Skilled researchers, writers, and scholars know that an essential part of making an argument lies in knowing the context of your issue and in addressing specific audiences who share interest or stakes in your issue. Our first assignment of the course asks you to consider the important audiences who might be interested in one of our assigned readings. Leading up to this assignment, we will discuss these types of audiences and consider why each might find the reading interesting, informative, important, or relevant to modern society. Format The format of this essay will follow MLA guidelines for academic essays. A proper MLA heading and title must be included. The essay must be double-spaced, typed in Times New Roman font size 12, and formatted with 1” margins around the page. All paragraphs must be indented. Content This essay of three, double-spaced pages will include an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. Each of the three body paragraphs will reflect on one type of audience who might be interested in the topics contained in the novel. Each body paragraph will mention an example from the novel and then explain why each particular audience might find the topic interesting, important, and/or relevant. You may generate your own audience types, and we will discuss possible audience types before the due date. This essay will NOT include any outside sources. All of your ideas must be derived from your own observations and experiences, and connected to examples from the reading selection.
