Topic: Should prostitution be legalized throughout the United States? Before you begin your essay, you should choose which stance you will take on the topic (i.e., are you for the topic, against it, or some combination of both). Then, develop a strong, specific thesis that argues a specific claim about that topic (i.e., don’t simply argue “I am for ______” or “I am against ______”). Remember that you must argue about a specific change that you want to see happen in order to rectify your issue. ·    To help build the ethos and logos appeals of your argument, you will be required to use at least five sources in your essay. While you may reference sources like personal blogs or Wikipedia in your paper, three of your five sources must be more credible (e.g., articles and/or images from magazines, journals, or newspapers; books; government websites, etc.). ·    Consider the audience of your essay. Will your reader be receptive to your argument, or will they be strongly opposed to your claims? Your audience’s reaction to your thesis will determine a number of things in your writing, including structure, tone, and evidence. Also, keep in mind that while recognizing opposing viewpoints certainly lends credibility and ethos to your argument, you don’t want to undermine your own claims.  Give credit and acknowledgement to other opinions, but simultaneously reinforce your own ideas.

Write a letter of complaint. Follow the rules for a formal letter, and use the full-block style. the complaint may be about anything you wish such as poor building maintenance, or disruptive noises from a nearby business.  Please note that a form letter or a template cannot be used in constructing your response. when a form letter or template is used, you are giving little to no thought to wording or formatting, and you are not actually creating  your own complaint; you are simply filling in the blanks of someone else’s work.

Topic: Conversations About Sustainability and Food Eric Schlosser’s essay “Fast Food Nation” sets off a great many conversations about the ways that America’s fast-food mentality has affected not only our physical health, but also the societal health of our culture in the United States. Schlosser provides his readers with a long list of “what fast food and the fast-food mentality have recently brought us” (534).  Think about and examine the various negative things that Schlosser believes the fast food industry has brought to the United States (a low-wage, alienated service-sector workforce, sophisticated mass marketing aimed at children, animal cruelty and the spread of factory farms, air and water pollution, soaring obesity rates and other related diseases).

Does college in united states provide “safe spaces” (Hemphill 558) or limit political discourse on campus to “free speech zones” (Hemphill 559). Are such policies as common as Hemphill suggests in “What Happened to Free Speech on College Campuses”? Use the Internet to research the current state of speech codes on campus, at HCC, the University of Houston, Lone Star College, Texas Southern University, San Jacinto College, and Rice University. Summarize the content of such codes, which may include definitions of offensive speech, harassment policies, or lists of penalties for noncompliance. Then discuss whether you approve or disapprove of the implementation of speech codes in college settings. Do you feel they infringe on individuals’ First Amendment rights (if you are unfamiliar with the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, look it up online to see what it entails), for instance, or do you think they’re a necessary tool in protecting the rights of minority students? Perhaps your opinion lies somewhere in between the two extremes. If so, you may need to narrow your discussion to a particular aspect of the codes you investigate.
