free speech on campuses CONTEXT On September 23, 2017, the University of California at Berkeley decided to cancel “Free Speech Week,” a week dedicated to members of the far-right. The rally aimed to allow popular right-wing speakers to visit UC Berkeley’s campus. In the past, far-right speakers who attempted to visit, such as Milo Yiannopoulos, were greeted by angry protestors, resulting in the cancellation of numerous events. “Free Speech Week” was canceled when organizers, as well as failing to secure venues on campus, refused to disclose the guest list for the event. The cancellation of earlier events and “Free Speech Week” have caused many to revisit a very timeless debate concerning free speech on college campuses. QUESTION Would you support the right of a controversial figure to speak at your academic institution if that individual had made hateful comments or used derogatory language (Westboro Baptist Church, Ann Coulter, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Milo Yiannopoulos, etc.)? Why or why not? TASK Write an essay in which you examine the right to speak and the right to protest speakers if you disagree with them. USEFUL QUESTIONS Which speakers should be allowed to speak/visit academic institutions? What rationale should inform an institution’s decision to allow a public figure tovisit? Should free speech be regulated to certain areas on a college campus? Who should decide what speech is acceptable in higher education? In what ways does the First Amendment impact what people are allowed to say in higher education? Research Paper needs to have academic sources and at least 3 pieces of evidence from each of these sources. Topic for paper is flexible but needs to be for the play, Hamlet (an example paper would talk about deception/betrayal or about the significance of the soliloquies). Please provide works cited. Short Story Explication “A Rose for Emily”When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral. (Faulkner 78). This sentence is gripping to the story, it sets up the death of a young woman, and the reader to use their imagination. The story begins and ends with death and ends with death, the hardships of a mutilated soul. This sentence creates interest and suspense for the reader and a curiosity as to the ending. The writer’s description of Emily’s hair, to me, symbolizes Emily’s perceived strength and hardships. She is weak and often seems off in another world, she seems to think she does not need to pay taxes, and realistically just loses her grip on reality. Emily is emotionally torn, by her disdainful life, turning her into an isolated woman. She has been sheltered most of her life. She has no pride, due to the abuse, denial of life, a father that robbed her of all life experiences. Emily is more than just eccentric, she is a very sickly, eccentric necrophiliac and murderer. After discovering the gray hair on the pillow, the reader was troubled by everything she left behind. You feel sorry for Emily and her tragic story. Her neighbors complaining about the stench that is coming from her house; she has no idea what this event truly means, because the Judge, who asked to bring it to her attention, was uncomfortable, causing the entire town to pity her situation; along with the relationship with her father. As the story evolves, with the death of her father, and Emily is not able to cope, having the town to pity her once again, and bury the body for her. With her bizarre behavior, the stench from her house, and isolation; raises an eyebrow when she purchases arsenic from the local pharmacist. Piquing the reader’s interest in the tragedy that this story will end.Short Story Analysis This assignment is a 4-5 page analysis of one of the short stories discussed in class. You will have the opportunity to focus on an approach to a short story that most interests you and should consider writing on the same story that you chose for your explication.You could examine character development, theme, symbolism and plot development, or you might want to use some critical approaches. Meaning, show me how both texts are functioning as literature as opposed to a direct translation/adaptation of a piece. This means that you need to treat the film as something separate than its source material, so if using “Nightmare Before Christmas”, you need to approach the movie as its own self-contained piece of literature, and show me how it is successful as literature just like its source material. You will want to be making heavy use of the bold terms that I give you in lecture like Plot Arc, Rising Action, Sympathetic Characters, etc in your essay. Show me how these two works are both working as literature, not just that the film is an extension of the text.

How might the reader regard the relationship between Victor and the creature in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein?
