SWOT Project

For your final paper, you’re going to build on many of the foundational principles we’ve discussed over the course of the semester in 3 distinct phases. Read this webpage and watch the video embedded there: SWOT ANALYSIS LINK: https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newTMC_05_1.htm  (Links to an external site.) Phase 1: Your culminating activity will involve determining your major goal(s) for the next 1, 5, and 10 years as they pertain to your career path. Obviously, your career path will impact and also be impacted by elements of your personal life, so it is permissible to bring personal circumstances into the discussion. However, make sure to keep the overall focus on how your career life path is a central component to your future aspirations. You may choose 1 major goal to discuss for each year of your plan or several goals for each year–that decision is yours to make. Write your goal(s) with the S.M.A.R.T. goal method. Phase 2: Once you determine your goal(s), you will then conduct a SWOT analysis (as we discussed in class) to determine the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats you may experience as you work to achieve your goal(s). Strengths and Weaknesses are internal characteristics (think of family/friend support, skills and abilities, educational level, etc.) to consider, while Opportunities and Threats are external factors (think of changing technology, the economy, political influences, global security, etc.). Please view the video in the link below and read the corresponding article, then use the attached document as a template for creating your own SWOT analysis worksheet (if it’s easier, you can create your own SWOT table in the Word document for your paper by making a table with 4 boxes–2 rows, 2 columns). You will conduct 1 SWOT analysis for each year of the plan (1 ,5, and 10 years) for a total of 3 SWOT analysis worksheets. When filling out the worksheets, you do not need to write paragraphs and sentences. Simply describing your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats as bullet points in each box will be sufficient. See the SWOT Worksheet here: SWOT Analysis Chart – Career Management.docx Phase 3A: (1 single-spaced page for each year; 3 written pages total) In narrative form, describe each part of your SWOT analysis for the given year in more detail. You will do this for each year (1, 5, and 10) of the plan. For example, consider the following types of questions: How can you use the strengths/opportunities to overcome the weaknesses/threats? How can you maximize the strengths/opportunities and minimize the weaknesses/threats? Knowing your weaknesses/threats, what can you do to overcome these challenges? Which of these factors: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, or Threats will play the most significant role in the journey towards your goals…Why? Based on the results of your SWOT analysis, what action steps can you take to help you achieve your goals? Phase 3B: (a couple of sentences at the end of the narrative for each year) Lastly, for each year describe one step you can take that may be daunting or scary, but you would be willing to attempt to help you achieve your larger goal(s). Think of it as a calculated risk. (Remember our discussion about not letting fear getting the better of you in your career decision making). This part only has to be a couple of sentences (what is the step you can take and how can it help you achieve your goal).  Overall, the format of your paper should look like this: Year #1 1. S.M.A.R.T. Goal(s): listed at top of the page (Phase 1) 2. Narrative: (Phases 3A & 3B, 1 single-spaced page long) 3. SWOT Analysis Worksheet (Phase 2) (separate page) Year #5 1. S.M.A.R.T. Goal(s): listed at top of the page (Phase 1) 2. Narrative: (Phases 3A & 3B, 1 single-spaced page) 3. SWOT Analysis Worksheet (Phase 2) (separate page) Year #10 1. S.M.A.R.T. Goal(s): listed at top of the page (Phase 1) 2. Narrative: (Phases 3A & 3B, 1 single-spaced page) 3. SWOT Analysis Worksheet (Phase 2) (separate page) Please include everything in one single Word or PDF document and upload it to Canvas. Your paper will consist of 3 written pages of narrative (1 single-spaced written page for each year) and 3 SWOT analyses (1 worksheet for each year).  Please use the following format: 12 point font Single-spaced 1-inch margins

Personal Assessment

Book Review Guidelines for Textbook There are five parts to writing a critical review of a piece of literature: 1. purpose, focus, perspective; summation of content; 2. coherence of analysis; 3. contributions to knowledge; 4. personal assessment and/or opinion. Purpose, Focus, Perspective In two to three well-organized paragraphs answer the following questions: Purpose: Why is the book being written? Focus: What major themes does the author propose to cover? What issues will be dealt with? Who or what is to be examined or studied? What is the time frame? Where will it take place? (It is not necessary to have all of these questions answered, nor do you have to follow the order given, but it is important to make sure all relevant information is included). Perspective: Who is the author arguing for or against? Summation of Content Summarize the contents of the book in three to four concise paragraphs. Pay attention to how the chapters of the book provide important information that supports what you think the author is arguing for or against. Take notes on each chapter’s themes. Can you find meaningful examples which support the author’s purpose, focus, and perspective above? Avoid re-telling the story. Write short summary statements that identify the themes and topics of the important chapters that convey the author’s purpose, focus, and perspective. Always connect the ideas presented in the chapters you judge are central to the author’s intent. Provide examples from the author’s writing that help you understand the major arguments being made. A useful summation of content succinctly conveys the author’s organizational structure and presentation of ideas, relaying important thoughts that are central to the author’s argument. After taking extensive notes based on the information above, you are prepared to write a brief summary of the information in three to four well- organized paragraphs. Remember: avoid re-telling the story. Coherence of Analysis Address any conclusions you judge the author reached. Perhaps several chapters provided a conclusion. Or, the last few chapters may have emphasized major points reached. In one or two paragraphs state the major conclusions reached. After writing    what you judge the conclusions are, in one paragraph, assess the author’s work based on how the parts of the story relate to the whole. After connecting the parts to the whole, come to an assessment of the work by answering the following question: Given the purpose, focus, and perspective, and understanding how the subject matter was presented, are the conclusions warranted? Contribution to Knowledge In one paragraph, address how the work helped you understand the historical concepts introduced in class. How did the information assist you in appreciating the historical experience of Mexicans and Latinas? Assess the work’s value in relationship to the content of the course and the concepts used to understand the Mexican and Latina experience. Look at the instructor’s presentation of the subject matter to date. Address any information provided by the Gonzalez textbook, if relevant. Understand how the text under review relays the subject matter via the course presentations and the Gonzalez textbook. Connect the sources of information together. Personal Assessment Now you are ready to conclude with your personal opinion. The previous sections dealt with the author on his/her terms, not yours. In a very concise paragraph, address the following questions: What was positive and negative about reading the piece of literature? How valuable was it in your quest to gain knowledge? Would you recommend the work to others? By following the steps above, you should be able to write a nice four to six page review of the book. There is no need to use headers for each section of the review. Just write out a nice assessment that addresses the five parts listed above in the order given. If you follow the order given, you should have a smooth flowing critique. As you are writing, always return to the instructions to guide you or get you back on track. Do not stray from the task at hand. Pay attention to the steps. Pay attention to vocabulary and its use. Pay attention to the themes/ issues/ideas you are addressing. Stay focused.

Development Strategies

Use various development strategies (such as compare contrast, definition, cause-effect, etc.). Pay attention to format and style.  Include a well-developed introductory paragraph with a clearly-worded thesis. Your thesis should be arguable; that is, you are not just explaining or describing your topic, but making a claim (of value, of policy) about it. Use the comments I gave you in the P&B to help focus your thesis.  Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence. All of the ideas developed in the paragraph should support the main idea of the topic sentence. Bring in evidence and support. Include examples. Refer to ideas in your secondary sources. Develop all of the body paragraphs. Do not write only two sentences for a paragraph! Write an effective and developed concluding paragraph.  Write a variety of sentence types. Edit sentence structures for grammatical accuracy. Use correct punctuation and capitalization.  Edit diction. Edit out informal word choices. Edit out second person ‘you.’ Do not overuse third person (we, our); if used, be sure you have a referent for it. Include at least one counter argument or arguments. Respond to it.  Use signal phrases, signal statements, and paraphrasing to include ideas from secondary sources. Integrate and synthesize secondary sources. he Research Essay assignment tests your rhetorical skills. Both the content (the ideas that you will argue and evidence and support that you use) and form (how you will present your ideas structurally, organizationally, and grammatically) should make an effective and readable argument. Support your claim with credible evidence, critically-informed interpretations, and valid analyses. Persuade the reader to your stance through rhetorical appeals of logos, pathos, and/or ethos. Make your paper interesting to read by writing in a style that is not banal. Do not generalize or use general terms. Bring in specific examples and word choices.   Edit out informal tone.  To move into interpretation and critical analysis, ask yourself how, why, and so, what questions. For example, why is this important to know? What is the significance of this? Is the effect beneficial or something to be avoided? Why does it matter? How does this affect people, specific groups, communities, society, the environment, etc.? How does it shape (viewers, youth, subjects, people, etc.)? What are the ramifications (socially, psychically, geographically, culturally, economically, etc.)?

Human Societies

Book Analysis: Prompt and Guidelines   Book: Diamond, Jared. Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies. New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1999.   Overview: Students will read and assess Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond. Upon reading the book, students will compose a 1000-1500-word analysis of Diamond’s account of evolutionary human history. In order to best complete the analysis, students are to base their writing around the below essay prompt.   Prompt: Coming from a science-oriented background, Jared Diamond presents a world history of human evolution across all the earth’s major continents in an attempt to equally track human progression. According to Diamond’s book, Guns, Germs, and Steel, why is it – as Yali asks the question – that the Europeans succeeded in conquering much of the world? Does Diamond effectively answer this question with science alone? And what factors according to Diamond allowed for certain civilizations, namely Eurasia, to advance quicker than others?   Guidelines: Ordinarily book reviews focus on the author and how well/poor the author does with their respective books. For an analysis, both the author is important, but the focus is on the content (history). Your analysis should gravitate around the message and information that is laid out in Diamond’s book to help deliver on the prompt above.   Some things to consider whilst reading and when writing are:                 -Who is Jared Diamond? What’s his background? His he a trained historian?                 -What is Diamond’s intention for this book? In other words, what is his thesis statement found in the introduction?                 -How is Diamond’s book set up? What do the different parts fixate on?                 -How much does Diamond/ or should Diamond have looked more at history than science?                 -In the end does Diamond accomplish for the book what he said he’s going to do in his thesis?   *(No, you are not answering these questions! These are to help you think.)   Because your analysis fixates on this one book, your paper should begin with the book’s bibliographic entry (that I have given you above) at the start of your paper. Then begin writing your paper. It’s similar to a book review because along the way you will more than likely have to cite Diamond’s book. In that case, you are allowed abbreviated footnote citations.   **For citations, consult my guidelines for the Primary Source Analysis.   Submission: Your analysis is due no later than midnight December 6, 2020 on Blackboard under the Assignments tab. Please upload a PDF or Word doc ONLY. Once uploaded SafeAssign will scan your Analysis against everything on the internet for plagiarism. Be sure to cite.
