Fictional Literature
For this discussion, select a review of fictional literature in your local newspaper or an online magazine. (Here is one source if you’re stuck: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/fiction-books-literature/ (Links to an external site.)). Post the review and your answers to the following questions in the discussion thread: Which compositional elements were addressed in the review? Do you agree with the critics comments? If not, please explain. What else would you have written about in the review? Please include the URL (web address) of the review so others may view the article.
Role Model
Read this week’s reading selection: “I am Not a Role Model”. Discuss the idea of role models, especially of celebrities as role models. Do you agree with Charles Barkley that parents should be role models to their kids? Are the best role models people you know, or can people you read about or see in the media serve as effective role models?
Alcohol Consumption and Health
For this discussion, first read through the section, Health Consequences (pp. 46-57) from the World Health Organization report, Global status report on alcohol and health (Links to an external site.) and then complete the following steps: In your initial post, highlight two statistics from the report regarding alcohol consumption and health. Discuss why these statistics are important. Note: Put the statistics into your own wordsdon’t quote the report. Then, discuss what you think needs to change about our societal approach to alcohol to improve upon these statistics (e.g. do we need new laws, better education?).
Phrasal Verbs
In two-paragraph, explain why phrasal verbs are difficult for many ELLs to master, AND describe some way you might teach some phrasal verbs to your prospective students using the information you gleaned from this course. Citing appropriate sources will enhance your score. In two-paragraph, describe what role the Interlanguage plays in the 2nd language learners development of their 2nd language. Citing appropriate sources will enhance your score. What is the Frame Elaboration hypothesis? Explain the difference between the following sentences to a student who is confused about the difference. (Where are you going?) Im going to Spain to study for one year. (Who will go?) I will go to Spain to study for one year. Recent research has demonstrated typical problems that ELLs create when using linking adverbs.
Neat People Versus Sloppy People
I know this course has been far different from what your experience has been in traditional, face-to-face English classrooms. Briefly describe some of the differences and similarities between the two approaches. What aspects of an on-line writing course work best? Which aspects of the course do you wish we had a ‘real’ classroom to augment? In Suzanne Britt’s essay “Neat People vs. Sloppy People,” she lists many specific characteristics of both styles. Which category do you believe that you fit into, based on her criteria? Sanders’s essay describes ‘warriors and toilers’ as the first two groups of men that he became aware of as a child. What are the two main groups of women that you first became aware of, and what were the circumstances? (For me, it would be ‘nurturer’ (my mother) and ‘sage’ (my grandmother).) Now, I’m also posting Week 7’s Discussion Questions here, well ahead of time, because they are a bit more involved. (Don’t forget — you will reply to these questions in Week 7’s Message Center.) Week 7 Discussion Questions (Chapter 10) To help you with Chapter 10 on Persuasion and Paper 5, following are the most common types of logical fallacies: slippery slope, in which the arguer states that taking the first step will lead inevitably to an undesirable second step, etc. ad hominem, in which one attacks the person, the speaker, rather than the issue; ad populum, in which an arguer appeals to a belief generally held by the masses without proving that the belief is relevant or true; hasty generalization, in which one assumes a general principle to be true based on too few instances of the statement actually occurring; post hoc, in which an author assumes that sequentiality necessarily implies causality; false dilemma, in which one posits that an either-or choice will result from some course of action when in reality there will exist many options. For an article of your choice from this chapter, I want you to. Discover at least four instances (and types) of faulty reasoning. Come up with at least two reasonable arguments of your own that counter sub-arguments in the essay. Comment on the use of authority in the article. Where does the author make reference to outside sources? Are they reliable? Are there enough of them?
Can abortion be considered a crime
It is an argumentive essay that needs a claim and a counterclaim. My claim is that abortion shouldn’t be considered a crime because of reproductive rights, accidental pregnancy, rape pregnancy, birth defects and/or danger to mothers health.
Digital Dossier
Background: The amount of personal information available on the Internet is frightening. Anonymous users can discover your name, DOB, place of address (with photo), email address(es), dating profiles, phone number, likes, dislike, family relatives, social media accounts, and photos the list goes on and on. Requirements: Using https://osintframework.com/, or other tools (ex. Google), research the information available on yourself.Try to find all of the information listed above (even if some of it might be inaccurate) and make sure to list the sites (URLs) you found it on. If you cannot find specific information, explain what you tried to do in order to find it. Then, answer these four questions: What are the advantages and disadvantages (or dangers) of these tools? Were you aware that this information was online? Does knowledge of this information on these sites make you vulnerable? What steps could you take to make this information harder to obtain? (give an example of actual, specific steps) There is no specific number of pages for this assignment. It has to have enough pages to prove your point and to cover all the requirements. You will post your findings on Blackboard, under the “Info Tool II (Digital Dossier)” link.
Academic Writing and Business Writing
Please answer all of the following questions based on what Vasquez writes in his article, not based on your own understanding. In addition, please do not simply copy text from the article. Please summarize what Vasquez writes in the article, and use quotation marks for occasional quotes from the article if you would like to. According to Vasquez, what are the similarities between academic writing and business writing? Try to come up with at least three of them. Please write a paragraph or two in posting your answer. According to Vasquez, what are the differences between academic writing and business writing? Try to come up with at least three of them. Please write a paragraph or two in posting your answer. Reflect on three experiences in this course. You can choose from among the writing assignments and from among the discussion topics. What differences have you noticed between the writing that you have done in this course and the writing you completed in a composition course (e.g., freshman composition, or something of that nature)?
Families in Transition
Families in transition are often dealing with difficult (and unexpected) circumstances. Consider your childhood or some of your friends early childhood histories. Are there any transitions that stand out as particularly stressful for you (or your friends)? Briefly describe the transition and what you think an educator could have done to help. Topic 3 DQ 2 Read the scenario to inform the questions that follow: Neveya, a second-grader, regularly does not bring school supplies needed to school due to financial hardships in the family that include the caretaking of an elderly family member. Frustrated, her teacher, Mrs Williams, has stressed to her administrator that she feels Neveyas parents do not care about her education. Upon hearing Mrs Williams strong opinion, the administrator quickly explained that the family was going through turmoil. Mrs Williams was immediately regretful of her comments as she had no idea of the familys situation. How would you ensure you have an open line of communication and know the circumstances of your families? How would you deal with a child not bringing the proper supplies to school? What would you do to support the childs family during this crisis?
