        Students with high incidence disabilities (specific learning disabilities, speech or language impairments, and other health impairments) account for 71% of the students served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (USDOE, 2015). Students with high incidence disabilities are often placed in regular education classrooms for at least 80% of the school day with a range of supports and accommodations. Over the years, research has shown that students with high incidence disabilities share characteristics such as deficits in academic and non-academic behavior; difficulties with literacy and numeracy; and problems with memory and executive function among others (Raymond, 2016). The special education teachers who serve these students must be skilled at identifying the characteristics and strategies that allow the selection of successful interventions.John is a sixth grade student who has just been identified as a student with a specific learning disability.
