Step 1: Watch the documentary Urbanized Step 2: Write a short response (~200-300 words, or 1 page double-spaced) based on the below prompt, that brings together and comments on the documentary as well as 1-2 assigned readings  Prompt: When the California freeways were originally being constructed in the 1950s, on the whole they were viewed as an incredibly positive urban development. It was only in the coming decades that their environmental, racial, and monetary downsides truly came to light. What solutions to problems of urbanization do you see being posited in the documentary Urbanized for which possible downsides are not discussed? What do you think these downsides are, and why?

This week, please seek out an article about a current event that has been publishing during the time of this course (so, no older than 2 months) related to environmental and ecosystem management. This could be something of local concern, national or international.  The Environmental News Network ) is a great place to look, but you may also search other sites, or do a Google search on “Environmental News.” Think broadly – there are lots of articles out there about fish and wildlife resources, not only environmental planning, but ecosystem-based as well!  If you are unsure if an article is appropriate, or if you’d like to use one older than a year old, please get my permission first.  (NOTE: DO NOT USE THE SAME ARTICLE AS ANOTHER STUDENT.) Title your post with the name of the article.   Thoroughly summarize the article and then explain how the article illustrates a term(s) or concept(s) we have studied in this class. The goal here is to exchange ideas and apply theoretical coursework to real-world examples.  Be sure to integrate course readings and course vocabulary with your explanation and do some additional research to flesh out the topic beyond your textbook and lecture notes.  We have almost finished up this course, so show us what you know!

Do you feel that GMOs are safe? Do you believe GMOs in foods should be labeled? Do you see GMOs affecting the world today? Please explain.

Do an image search on the internet for “Life Cycle Analysis”  and select one of the flow charts/images that you find.  It can be either a general flow chart for how Life Cycle Analysis works or it can an example from a specific industry or product.  Either way, do not use the same image or example as another student.   In your post you should embed the image and explain what it illustrates.  You should provide the link to the site where the image originally came from and please title your post very descriptively so the rest of us know exactly what your post is about.

The CDC has great resources for health care organizations and other businesses as well. You can view these resources at the CDC’s emergency planning website ). Choose one of the types of natural disaster and devise an action plan to prepare your local community for this disaster. Prepare a professional proposal to presen to your local governmental officials to use as a guide when preparing the community for this natural disaster. Be sure to cover the following topics in your journal entry: Identify local, state, and federal resources available for assisting in your community natural disaster preparedness, during the disaster, and/or post-disaster recovery. Differentiate the roles of the family, community, local government, and national government within your chosen natural disaster. Identify and discuss the role of the public health nurse in the stages of the disaster management cycle for your chosen natural disaster in your community.

Read  the article, A Synthesis of the Science on Forest and Carbon for U.S. Forests (Links to an external site.), by Ryan et al. Then write a 1 SINGLE SPACE page essay that a) introduces the topic covered in the article and b) describes the tradeoffs (benefits and costs) of three (3) different strategies for sequestering carbon in forests.

Do some internet research searching on the topics of remote sensing and GIS for environmental management or research purposes.  From your results, select one general type of remote sensing/GIS or one specific environmental example and summarize it in a fully-developed forum posting.  Be sure to discuss the pros and cons of the one you are highlighting,  discuss quality and availability of data, benefits to environmental management, and the implications for intrusion on privacy.  Keep the focus on environmental management here, don’t pick an example that doesn’t have environmental management uses.    Do not pick the exact same example as another student.  If you pick the same general type of remotely sensed technology that is ok as long as your applied example is different.  Be sure both of those are reflected in the title of your post.
