Write a short-form commentary (750 words) of The Fits. Critically examine an issue or a series of issues raised within the film. You are encouraged to engage all of your senses while viewing the movie (i.e., what is the mood of the piece, how was sound incorporated into the viewing experience, etc.), and pay particular attention to how the dance has been captured on the screen. For this assignment you need to use part of your commentary to explore the cultural content and context, message and/or impact of this movie. Remember to take notes during the film screening, or immediately after. It will help you track your insights. Do not merely rehash what a previously published review already states. You need to cite at least two sources, preferably one that is academic, rather than other film reviews or the website for film itself.

Good will hunting Address the prompts below in a thoughtfully composed essay. There are many concepts to consider in Good Will Hunting. One concept is Dr. Sean Maguire’s (Robin William’s character) concept of a soulmate. What is your concept of a soulmate? As you define that, think about the concept of triad used in this unit. Then, look at Sean’s concept of a soulmate. How does it differ from your concept? Does Sean’s concept make you redefine yours? In the end, what do you think of the concept of a soulmate?

YOU HAVE TO WATCH BOTH FILMS AND COMPARE.  Compare the classic Mexican film María Candelaria with Heli.  How has Mexico changed? You do not need to do research for the writing of the paper (although you may draw upon assigned reading for the class).  Instead, you should focus on your analysis of the films.  Your essay should have an argument which is clearly stated in the introduction, developed and supported in the body of the essay, and reiterated in the conclusion. Your essay should have a title page (with a title).  Your essay should be built around cohesive paragraphs of four to six sentences.  Each paragraph should have an explicit purpose, explained in a topic sentence.  Do not use contractions, or colloquial words and phrases.  Do not say “I think,” “I believe,” and other such expressions—just say what you have to say.   Your final drafts should be clean and neat, free of distractions from misspelled words and grammatical mistakes.  Proofread at least your first draft, making any necessary corrections.

Use ideas from “On Reading a Video Text“ and “Masters of Desire: The culture of American advertising“ as lenses to analyze the video advertisement ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koPmuEyP3a0 ). How does the advertisement attempt to persuade the viewer to utilize – or not utilize – a product, service, or brand? What story does it tell? What sorts of cultural symbols, values, and myths does it draw on? Who is the target audience for this advertisement? You must consider how your argument complicates or extends the ideas from “On Reading a Video Text“ and “Masters of Desire: The culture of American advertising“.
