The book that needs to be discussed as the movie is “You are worth it” by Kyle Carpenter. Using the text you selected during Week 1 of our class, the final essay asks you to discuss its cinematic possibilities. You will write a four to five page essay (excluding Works Cited) explaining which parts of the story would be easy to adapt and which would resist translation. You should also touch upon some of the social, economic, technical, or spectatorial challenges a filmmaker might encounter in adapting the text. Your submission will be a well-thought out and well-organized essay which is properly formatted, based on the APUS writing standards and policy. Be sure to include a thesis in the introduction and develop that thesis throughout the bulk of your essay. Use appropriate movie titles (including year) to support your thesis. You should make use of the online APUS library in searching for sources to support your points. Avoid all uses of Wikipedia (or any encyclopedia or dictionary) and reference guides like SparkNotes. Describe each of the three basic categories of sound (dialogue, sound effects, and music). Explain how the different categories of sound are used in your chosen film which is Titanic. Assess the impact of sound in establishing the theme. How does the use of sound inform the mood of the scene, or the film, overall? Can you identify specific sounds in your film that allow you to infer a particular genre? Since each category of sound may produce a range of effects, how might you characterize the effects in your film? For example, realistic and expected sound effects may have a different effect on a viewer than exaggerated or unexpected ones. Assess how the scene or sequence would play differently if you changed or removed a key category of sound. You must use at least two outside sources, in any combination of embedded video clips, still photos, or scholarly sources. What was the intent of the film? Start by talking about what the film is and what it was intending to do. In other words – was it a comedy and was written to be that? Was the film successful in that attempt? Based on what you believe the intent of the film was, do you feel it was successful in its attempt? So – if the film was a comedy, was it successful? What is the primary conflict of the story? What are secondary conflicts in the story? Who is the protagonist of the story and who is the antagonist? How were camera angles, lighting, exposure, contrast and color all used to create mood and visual interest? Give at least two specific examples. Talk about the story. Give a short summary of what the film was about Wrap up your critique by talking about the film in general. Did the story engage you? Were you able to identify or empathize with the characters and did they move you in any way? What was your opinion of the film?
