Precipitation patterns on Earth depend on the characteristics of the surface and location. Why is precipitation important for life on land? Discuss the hydrological cycle and why it is important for the formation of precipitation. Describe at least 3 types of precipitation and describe how each one forms (the conditions necessary). Give examples of one location where precipitation is very low and one location where it is very high, and discuss why? 

Throughout the semester, you have learned about various components, processes, and interactions in the “Earth System”; in other words, the “natural environment”. Choose an aspect of the Earth System that you thought was particularly interesting and write about it (MAKE SURE IT IS ABOUT SOMETHING WE COVERED IN CLASS; SOMETHING RELEVANT ABOUT NATURE). Include what the basic components (“parts”) are, discuss some processes (“things that are happening”), and explore some ongoing interactions (“how some things are affecting other things”).  Example: Here is a very simple, basic example, just to give you an idea (I didn’t elaborate here because it is up to you to do that over 5 paragraphs): You might choose earthquakes (THIS IS ONLY AN EXAMPLE. CHOOSE WHATEVER YOU LIKE THAT IS RELEVANT TO THIS CLASS). What is particularly interesting about them to you? Why did you choose them? You would need to address the “parts” involved, such as faults and energy waves (and more). You would then need to discuss the “things that are happening”, such as the waves moving through the ground and then shaking things up on the surface (and more). You would finally need to discuss “how some things are affecting other things”, such as the earthquake creating a tsunami, which affects people along coastlines (and more).

Your assignment is to research a real food recipe and describe its origin, diffusion and current consumption patterns. Follow the directions below and write your essay Step 1- Select a recipe that is associated with a particular culture, ethnic, nation, or other type of region. The best candidate is your favorite family recipe that has been passed down through the generations. Step 2- Write the individual ingredients for the recipe in detail (as if from scratch). If you don’t have a copy of the recipe you will need to interview a person that does by phone or e-mail. Step 3- Research on the Internet where the ingredients were originally domesticated. If there are certain ingredients that have not been domesticated, find their natural habitat (shrimp, cranberries, etc.). Research the domestication of animals (cows, chickens, etc.). Step 4- Create (draw/illustrate) a basic map showing the diffusion of the ingredients into your recipe region. Print a blank world map of the Internet. Step 5- Write a 1–2 page analysis of your research, including how your region’s food has been influenced by diffusion/ migration (the Old Silk Road or Columbian Exchange). Discuss the climate and land use of the region where your ethnic dish is from.

Read the section on “Yosemite State and National Park” (pages 28-34) in the article “Fifteen Events that Shaped California’s Human Landscape.” View the video documentary “Yosemite National Park Documentary” by National Parks and Nature.   This paper should integrate the material you learned from the article and documentary about the natural and human landscape of the Yosemite region. Be sure to emphasize the different types of landforms (e.g., mountains, valleys, rivers, etc.) in the Yosemite region, including the geologic and geomorphic processes responsible for their formation. Include aspects of the human landscape (e.g., historical settlements, human activities, and their impacts on changing the natural landscape over time, etc.) in your paper. It’s go geology. It’s kind of a role play essay in a sense. We’re writing a letter to the president about hurricane katrina. I have the instructions. For the purpose of this assignment, assume that you are a geologist and the Science Advisor to the President of the United States. It is August 30, 2005 and Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Louisiana yesterday and the President just asked you for a position paper on New Orleans and the surrounding area and what the long term response of the Government of the United States should be to this disaster. As the Science Advisor to the President, it is your job to provide the best obtainable science based recommendations to the President. That does not include “it feels good” advice or “it is the right thing to do” recommendations, unless one or both are the same as the best scientific recommendations. He has other advisors that provide the other types of recommendations. It is your job, along with the other advisors, to make sure the President is fully informed on an issue before he makes any decisions pertaining to that issue. It is the Presidents job to consider the recommendations from all of his advisors and then make his decision as to the policies that will be implemented. He may make a “feel good” policy even if it is not scientifically sound, but that is his decision, not yours. Instructions: You need to write a double-spaced, 12-point font, position paper outlining your recommendations to the President and the rationale for each recommendation. Has to include introduction- general information about the Rocky Mountains but have to present it in a geological way. A geology portion that discusses the geology of the mountain (Rock Types, Stratigraphy) shows which rock unit is older and which is younger. For this term paper, you will demonstrate your understanding of material from throughout the course by presenting the development for a western city. The city you present can be any city in the western culture, except New York City or Los Angeles. It can be your hometown, a city you have visited often, or simply a city that is interesting to you. This term paper is intended to test your ability to think independently and apply your knowledge of general course concepts to a specific case. As such, the guidelines for this paper are fairly broad. In general, successful papers will include a discussion of the following: why you picked your particular city, its geographic location, historical and urban significance, demographic changes, current socioeconomic characteristics, and challenges in the development of the city.
