What were the factors that made the United States a leading industrial power in the years following the Civil War? In other words, what advantages did the U.S. have that allowed it to industrialize so quickly & effectively? 2. Was industrialization good for everyone?  If so, why? If not, why? Which groups of people benefitted from it, and which groups suffered? 3. What was the official stance of the federal government when it came to regulating the economy? In other words, did the government feel that it was best to closely regulate the economy & businesses or not? Did the government sometimes take actions that conflicted with their official stance? (Hint: pay attention to the 14th amendment as described in the reading from “A People’s History of the United States”).

You will write a travel guide for a specific city at a specific time, chosen from the list below. Your guide should give potential travelers an idea of what there is to do in the city, both musically and non-musically. Where is the best music to be heard? Which performers should be sought out? What other activities are recommended? Where are the best places to stay and eat? Your guide should describe at least FIVE musical places or events, and FIVE other activities, places, or events. Presentation is important: you want to ‘sell’ your city to the public, so illustrations (from the period you are studying) are encouraged. You will need to read widely in music history as well as in political, artistic, social history. Seek to provide the widest angle possible on these places, and to give a sense of what being there might have been like. Choose one of these places/times: Venice in the 1640s OR the 1720s; Versailles in the 1680s; Paris in the 1790s OR the 1830s OR the 1890s; Bayreuth in the 1880s; Vienna in the 1780s; London in the 1720s OR the 1800s.

You will present a two-page proposal for your independent research project.  The goal of a research proposal is twofold: to present and justify the need to study a research problem and to present the practical ways in which the proposed study should be conducted. The design elements and procedures for conducting research are governed by standards of the history discipline, therefore, the guidelines for research proposals are more exacting than a general project proposal. They must provide persuasive evidence that a need exists for the proposed study. The research proposal will be a starting point for your research project.  You will be able to change your proposal later in the term, but this application must be acceptable before I can grade your other two assignments for the research project.

The purpose of this assignment is for you to research and analyze a state and/or local government issue. At this point in the course, you have learned to identify the basic components of a foreign policy article, how to best read the article, and how to apply the lessons learned from the article to the formation of your own foreign policy expertise. In the course of this process, you are also learning how to write such foreign policy articles yourself, and will demonstrate your expertise in your own research paper.Another element in analyzing a foreign policy article such as this one is to look at the bio data of the author, as this will help you better understand his/her intentions, level of expertise, and ideological orientation. Unlike some of the authors we have read this semester, he is not famous and a household name.Here are the bio data of Bayless Manning:Bayless Andrew Manning (March 29, 1923 – September 18, 2011) was an American lawyer, law professor, writer and expert of corporate law.[1] He served as the dean of Stanford Law School from 1964 to 1971.[2] He left Stanford in 1971 and became the first president of the Council on Foreign Relations.[1][3]Manning worked as the editor of the Yale Law Journal as a law student before graduating from Yale Law School as valedictorian of the class of 1949.[1] He then clerked for Justice Stanley Forman Reed, an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.[2]Manning taught as a professor at Yale University from 1955 to 1964.[1] He simultaneously served as a member of the President’s Advisory Panel on Ethics and Conflicts of Interest in Government beginning in 1960.[1] Manning became the dean of Stanford Law School from 1964 to 1971.[1] In 1971, Cyrus R. Joe Biden and Donald Trump have both asserted their own positions regarding China.How much does the maelstrom surrounding US China policy reflect the views of Manning as expressed in his essay? Would Manning look more favorably on the Biden or the Trump approach? Why?4) Manning wrote this piece in 1976, an eternity ago in foreign affairs. Much has changed in the international system since that time. In his piece, Manning makes a number of predictions regarding the shape of the 21st Century international system.How accurate were those predictions? Read The Atlantic article “The Thucydides Trap: Are the U.S. and China Headed for War? By Professor Graham Allison, September 24, 2015. On page 7 of the article there is a table which shows the sixteen instances in which a ruling power and a rising power came into conflict. In twelve (12) of the sixteen (16) occasions, the powers went to war. You are to prepare a paper whose theme will be one of the twelve occasions that led to war, but not World War I (Russia, U.K. France vs. Germany) or World War II (Soviet Union, U.K. France vs. Germany) or (Japan vs. United States). Your paper should provide the historical background which led to the confrontation, a short retelling of the war, and an analysis of the ultimate outcome.

Throughout the past few weeks we have explore the history of the United States regarding inequality. I have challenged you to look at situations through the perspective of others who are not part of the dominate culture. We have covered at the major groups of African American, Native American, Latina/os, Asian American, those who identify as LGBTQ and gender issues. We explored inequalities and contributions. As this quick semester comes to an end please write in the journal what has most affect you. What did you learn about yourself? How will this impact how you will view social justice moving forward and what can you do to improve equality for others. Have your views on the recent protests changed, why or why not? You are to write 2-3 full pages that are double spaced with one inch margins in 12 font.
