European Descendants
1. Explain how and why the dominant understandings of migration and nationhood in Argentina over a 150-year period, fostered the construction of Argentina as a white nation of European descendants. This national project envisioned the creation of a European enclave; a nation without Blacks and Amerindians. READ: Migration, Race and Nationhood in Argentina, Tanja Bastia and Matthias vom Hau ESSAY #2 The civil war in El Salvador lasted over a decade and took the lives of more than seventy thousand citizens. In January 1992, the leadership of the leftist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) and the negotiating team of the Salvadoran government, joined at the last minute by President Alfredo Cristiani, signed a peace accord ending twelve years of civil war in El Salvador. Many analysts consider El Salvadors transition from civil war to peace among the most successful implementations of a peace agreement in the post-Cold War period. Almost exactly ten years later to the day, on January 20, 2002, a group of scholars, politicians and civic leaders held a conference to evaluate in political and economic terms the years since the signing of the accord. Given the nature of the Salvadorian transition, what have been the major achievements/setbacks in the post- Civil War years? How have the government, civic and business leaders dealt with the issues of political and economic exclusion? Compare and contrast the views of the THREE authors.

The evidence is key here. Every paragraph should have specific examples (quotes, etc.) drawn from primary sources in ” How Europe Underdeveloped Africa.pdfPreview the document”. Women In History
For sources use ONLY THE READINGS/attachments/files I PROVIDE In 1976, historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich reconstructed the lives of a group of Puritan women in colonial New England, women who minister Cotton Mather referred to as the hidden ones. These women remained hidden from history because they lived in ways that strictly conformed to Puritan ideals of chastity, piety, and obedience. In light of what she found, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich concluded that well behaved women seldom make history. Draw upon the course readings from at least SEVEN WEEKS throughout the semester, (rather than just from the beginning, middle, or end) and lecture material to write an essay that describes how the women we have discussed throughout the semester misbehaved and defied gendered expectations through their words and/or actions from the colonial era to the present day. How did/have their respective communities, and American society more broadly, understood (or misunderstood) and responded to their behavior? How have laws, social customs, race/ethnicity, socio-economic status, and religion facilitated and/or shaped these womens lives, their defiant acts, and responses to their conduct? Note: Make sure to address ALL segments of the multipart question in your essay. Your essay should also be written with as much care and attention to organization, grammar, and argument as possible given the time constraints of the exam.
Television Programs
1. Choose at least one of the following films / television programs to watch in its entirety (the whole thing): The Vote (PBS 2-Part Film) 2. Read the relevant chapter or chapters in the Foner textbook that cover the subject / time period in the film you have chosen. While you are reading take notice of how many examples given are of men and how many are of women. When women are mentioned, are they mentioned by name? How many details are given? 3. Compare how the subject is covered in the film and textbook. 4. Review the additional material on the same subject that is included in the course packs and class assignments. You may also want to do your own research on the subject you have chosen. As you research the individual sub-topics that are included think about these questions: Who are the women that are mentioned in the textbook chapter? What more can you find out about them? What sections of the chapter do not mention any women? Who are the women who are being ignored? For example, in chapter 17 Foner describes the Anti-Imperialist League and gives a list of prominent members all men. This description gives the impression that the league was an all-male organization, but the league included many women, including a womens auxiliary. 5. Write a critical essay analyzing how the topic is portrayed in the textbook (good, bad, indifferent, etc.) Identify strengths, and make suggestions for improvement – things to add, things to subtract, things to rephrase, etc. Rewrite relevant sections of the textbook as needed. Describe what examples you would replace or simply add new examples to various sections of the chapter highlighting the contributions of women. You may also describe how you might expand existing examples of women by adding more details. Chapter sections might be re-organized, instead of including women as the last example, they could be moved to the first example. Wording might be changed, instead of a sentence that reads women also participated you might write men and women participated.
