Like last week’s topic, week three’s topic will require a bit of research.  Otherwise, the rules are the same as Topic #1.  Be sure to list all your sources–with a minimum of 3–at the end of your post (and yes it is all right to post your sources separately in this forum, in case you forget them the first time).  See the complete instructions in Module 1. Topic #3:  part 1:  Now a look at yet another pandemic, the so-called Spanish Flu of 1918.  What happened, exactly?  What factors made the world particularly susceptible to this disease at that time?  How many people died in all?  How many in the U.S.?  How was it treated?  What similarities and differences in preventative measures can you see between this influenza pandemic and COVID-19?  Rate the effectiveness of these measures. American Nativism

In 5-6 paragraphs, answer the following question. Be sure to (1) answer the question with a clear and persuasive thesis, (2) argue your thesis in a logical organization, and (3) defend your argument with evidence. Build your argument using evidence and illustrations from your readings and lecture notes. Throughout the second half of our class, we have looked at several forms of American nativism–the belief that American-born individuals should be protected from and prioritized above the interests of immigrants. What factor best explains American nativism: religious differences, economic concerns, political ideology, or ethnicity / race? Pick the factor you think has been most determinative in driving nativism. Your answer should briefly explain the role of all four factors in contributing to nativism, then make your case for why the factor you’ve chosen is the most influential. A good essay will explain where this attitude comes from, how it has shaped American approaches to immigration and citizenship, and its legacy in our national history.

Online Museum

This is an alternative option to visiting a museum or art gallery. For this option, select and curate 5 works of art to include in your own art museum. Use your textbook and online sources to help you find these works of art. A good resource for this assignment is the Google Arts and Culture website from the Google Cultural Institute. Here you can immerse yourself in cultural experiences across art, history and wonders of the world—from more than a thousand museums across 70 countries. Write a 2–3 page report of 500–750 words that describes your experience. Select a minimum of 5 works of art by 5 different artists from different time periods discussed from the 18th century to modern times. Clearly identify the location of the museum and your initial reaction when exploring the artwork in the online museum or gallery. Provide a description and summary of at least 5works of art by 5 different artists. Include a screenshot of each piece. Explain your initial reaction to the artwork you selected and explain why you chose each piece. Describe the role of museum founder and curator. Use the class text as a reference (additional sources are fine but not necessary unless required by your content). Your report should include connections you make between things observed in your activity and things learned in the course and text.
