History
Mass Movements
The purpose of the course was to use the past to help us better understand and talk about today by examining two clashing ideologies that were first formulated in the 17th and 18th centuries: All men are created equal, and inalienable rights. Racism and the creation of other-ness, used as a justification for slavery and the extermination of Native Americans and thereafter to limit rights and equality. We attempted to figure out: When has one of these conflicting ideas tended to prevail over the other, and why? How do different forces in society individuals, mass movements, institutions, economic structures, and government affect the development and strength of these opposing ideas? What makes people act in support of their beliefs? What makes them too frightened or apathetic to act to be bystanders? What is the connection between racial otherness and two other systems of oppression gender and class inequality?
Political Thought
Directions : Answer each of the following 2 questions in an essay of 800-1000 words. 1. Consider Machiavellis new approach to the study of politics. How does Machiavelli *break with the medieval Christian view of politics; *while at the same time look backward at the commitment to civic virtue/ civic spiritedness in the Roman Republic; and *ultimately, bequeath to the modern world a realist political science focused on power, interest conflict, and a psychology of human nature ? (Consult our email-based lectures.) 2. Consider the role of ideas in guiding politics. Discuss how an ideology is a conceptual framework which helps us to describe action; interpret action; justify the ends and means of political action; and persuade us how to get things done. Often ideology simplifies and popularizes more intricate traditions of political philosophy. But unlike political philosophy and political science, the purpose of ideology tends toward action, not the weighing of the truth claims of its propositions. Choose 3 ideologies and describe *how each conceptually comprehends what the world is, and what the world is not; and *how each provides us with a way we can conceive of a way of ordering our lives? (Consult the Andrew Heywood book POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES, chapters 1, 2,3,4 & 7. These chapters are supplemented by my email-based lectures.)

freedom Of Choice
1. “The time has come for a new movement toward true equality for all women in America,” declared the 1966 Statement of Purpose of the National Organization for Women. What specific measures did the document call for to provide the women of the United States with “opportunity and freedom of choice”? Over a half a century has passed since Betty Friedan wrote those words. How far have we come in achieving her goals? (450 words) 2.When the founders of the United States thought about freedom and liberty, they often spoke of “rights.” The Civil War generation went beyond that. They created the first national definition of citizenship and national definition of equality. The activists of the 1960s era also emphasized rights and equality, but the term that they used more often was “civil rights.” This is why their movement for racial equality was often called a “civil rights movement.” Read Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1955 speech from Montgomery, Alabama (Give Me Liberty!, chapter 24) and the “Statement of Purpose, National Organization for Women,” from chapter 25). Can feminism be understood as a civil rights movement as well? If so, what were and still are its most important goals?(100 words)
