Great Famine
The mid-1840s the Irish potato crop was struck by the potato blight, a plant disease that wiped out the crop. Famine ensued in Ireland, hard times were felt in England, and a general economic recession followed on the Continent, which would spark the Revolutions of 1848. In many ways, the Great Famine was the result of centuries-long English policies in Ireland that had resulted in an impoverished peasantry wholly dependent upon one food crop, the potato. The British government barely intervened, leaving the Irish to their fate and to what private charity could provide, which was precious little. Millions perished and millions more emigrated to England and the United States. This selection is an eyewitness account of conditions in Ireland in 1847. 1. Read the attached document and answer the following questions: a. Characterize the conditions described in this document. b. Why do you think the writer concentrated his report on children? 2. 150 word minimum Grading Policy: Discussion posts are graded within one week of the due date posted. There is no wrong answer, just support your ideas with examples. 4. What were the differing views of witches in Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and Modern? 5. What was the Malleus Maleficarum? British Global Policies
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2013/apr/09/russell-brand-margaret-thatcher In this 2-3 page essay, I’d like you to consider Say Nothing. It is a gut-wrenching examination of The Troubles and those that participated in the violent religious and nationalist conflicts that lasted from the 1960s until the 1990s. The book centers on the disappearance of a young mother from her flat and the subsequent mystery of what happened to her. But, the larger issue under examination is what motivated the Provos and how the movement developed from student protests to, essentially, murder squads. In your essay, please discuss the ways in which British global policies butted up against Irish republican aims. How did the British exert authority in Northern Ireland? What policies did they employ there and how did the Irish react? What were central tensions between the British, the Ulster Unionists and the Republicans? A bibliography is not necessary for this unless you use additional sources. Please do carefully indicate page numbers when using direct quotes from the book.

Herodotus and Mandeville
Both Herodotus and Mandeville describe a variety of peoples in their texts, but their views and comments on those peoples are very much colored by the societies that they themselves come from. In fact, most scholars agree that as we try to make sense of the other, we are actually making sense of ourselves. Your task in this paper is to show how Herodotus and Mandeville do just that. In other words, what do Herodotus and Mandeville reveal about ancient Greek and medieval European societies even while they are describing the societies of others? Please use simple parenthetical citations, using the authors name and the page number, when you draw upon information from either of the texts. Examples: Mandeville notes that Muslims do not eat pork (Mandeville, 39). Xerxes asked Demaratus, will the Greeks dare to lift a hand against me? (Herodotus, 448). The Histories. By Herodotus. Historical Criticism
We are starting Historical Criticism. Read Chapter 6 on Historical Criticism with all the examples and all the exercises. This type of criticism requires research, since you need to know about the authors’ lives, time period, etc. For the writing assignment for this week, you will answer the following questions. There is a Spanish movie directed by Carlos Atanes based on “The Metamorphosis” that places the action in Germany during the Nazi time. Why would the director of the movie make the decision to change the time? Why did he decide to pick the Nazi time and Germany? How does that emphasize the main idea of the story? To answer these questions, you will have to conduct research. Write two-three pages. This is not a formal essay, just answers to my questions. You do NOT have to watch the film to answer my questions, but it might be beneficial to do it. I do not want to provide you with a link since they change all the time and I am sure you can do it on your own. You have to do research and find out when the story was written and who the author was. You will have to think why the director of the film decided to change time and place and explain it.
