You will choose one or two specific monuments or memorial in the United States to research and teach others about. Your monument can be anything, really, as long as it is in the United States. Once you choose your monument, prepare to answer ALL of these questions in teaching an audience about it: 1. When and by whom was the monument built? Was it man-made, or a naturally made thing? Who designed it? 2. Why was it built? What is the significance of it? 3. Where is it located? (Be specific—city, state) 4. What is its purpose? 5. Why would / do people visit it? What do you and the visitors think of it? 6. What effects does the monument have on the human activity around it? Like economy / tourism, culture? 7. Be prepared to show images of your monument—as many as you need. You should give credit to wherever you find your images. In addition to basic information your audience should know, you must make conclusions about your topic in some, or all, of these categories: 1. Is the monument powerful? How and why? (Note that powerful does not have to mean GOOD power.) 2. What is the purpose of the monument? Does the monument serve this original purpose in the 21st century? Why and how? 3. Is there anything controversial about your chosen monument(s)? Or, does the monument help / hurt society or surrounding community in a complicated way? Are there people who have a problem with this monument, and people who fight to remove the monument? Similarly, are there people who fight for the monument to survive? How, why, and where do you stand on the problem? Last, I want you to think about the need for monuments in general. Your project needs to answer these questions: • Do communities need monuments? Why or why not? • Are there any other ways that we can honor or remember the past without the use of monuments? Decide and discuss where you stand on the use of monuments specifically. For this option, the web page would be dedicated to the monument and / or your chosen text. o The easiest platform to use for this assignment is Google Sites ), which is a structured Wiki- and Web page-creation tool that will allow you to link words, phrases, or other textual elements to pages with critical notes. Essentially, this assignment calls for a critical close reading of a single text. It should include a critical introduction, multiple textual annotations, and a bibliography of sources that are relevant to your chosen text. If you wish, you may also embed or attach images of the text in its original publication – these are usually easy to find (email me if you have difficulty) – and you can annotate these images with critical notes related to the text’s original format and publication. o Basically, create a visually pleasing site about your topic and your critical view on the topic. o Some other options for blog sites that are free: ? Medium is the best option for a Blog / Essay hybrid. ? Wordpress is the most popular blogging site. If you like it, you can keep it and use it for yourself in the future after this assignment.

Students have multiple choices for primary documents Students will choose one of the documents given by the instructor.   Only write a summary on one (1) document per module.  Upload your summary where it says UPLOAD PRIMARY SOURCE MODULE 1. I thought it would be beneficial to give you an example of how to write about a primary document.  Primary documents are letters, newspapers, laws, or other forms of communication that occurred during the time period being studied.  When studying the American Revolution, an example of a primary document would be the Declaration of Independence.  You should give a summary of the primary document. Some of the questions that should be included in your answer would be the following:      1.  Who wrote the document and when was it written?      2.  Who was the intended audience?      3.  What was the purpose of the document?      4.  What was one of the most important or most important line from the document? You are asked to write a response to one primary document for each test period or module.   The following represents a student response to the primary document of the Declaration of Independence: Thomas Jefferson, the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, wrote his draft of this document in 1776.  Although the declaration was for the whole world, Jefferson’s main audience was the king of England, George III.  Jefferson’s purpose was to announce to the world that the thirteen colonies were free and independent from Great Britain and that these thirteen colonies were forming a new country called the United States.  The document is divided into different parts: the preamble or introduction, a list of grievances against the king, and a conclusion.  Several of these grievances were later addressed in the Constitution and in the Bill of Rights – such as, not allowing soldiers to be quartered in homes without the consent of the homeowner and the right to have a trial by jury.  Other notable grievances included Britain’s taxation policies with colonial representation in Parliament.  Probably the most memorable line from the Declaration is, “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”  It is ironic that when Jefferson wrote of liberty, he was a slave holder.  Summaries should be at least one page excluding headings.  You may want to write a longer response depending on the length of the primary document.  Each primary document is worth 20 points.  The primary documents are located in the link on the left margin under the heading of primary documents. UPLOAD YOUR PAPER WHERE IT SAYS SUBMIT PRIMARY SOURCE MODULE 1 All papers should be Double Spaced, in Times New Roman font 12 pnt. I am reading Cultures of the West A History Volume 2 Since 1350 Third Edition by Clifford R Blackman. I am in Chapter 16.  I need a brief paragraph written for each question below. By brief,  I mean a paragraph or so, not a word, phrase, or sentence or two.  In other words, I don’t need a 500-word essay per question, but I do need to have a complete, specific answer with details.  The idea is that I demonstrate the subject matter read.  No outside sources are necessary. Describe the extend and power of the Ming Dynasty Empire that you have learned about in this video. Give evidence in terms of culture, technology, economic power and military power with respect to both Asia and Africa. Essay #2: Expansion of the Age of Revolution (50 points):    In a 2-page essay (at least 500 words) respond to the following prompt. Your response must include at least two direct references to primary source documents on the French Revolution (in Bb folder for Dec 1st) and/or the Slave Revolution in the Caribbean collection (in Bb folder for Dec 15th, also if you focus on the Haitian revolution one of your direct references may be to the documentary Egalite for All).    One of the goals of this course is to view a historical trend from a variety of different perspectives. Throughout the game you focused on the reaction of the colonists of British North American to the conditions of their colonization and to the ideas of the Enlightenment. During the last few weeks of the semester we also examined the expansion of that revolution idea in France and in Saint Domingue.    Select one of those revolutions (French or Haitian) and explain how the perspective of its participants differed from those of the Americans. How were the actions taken in those revolutions different? Were some of their goals similar or different to those in New York and the other colonies of British North America? Refer to at least one specific issue that was important in the French or Haitian Revolution that was either not important in the American Revolution or was addressed differently.
