Please answer two of the following questions in an organized, formal, analytical essay, of at least 800 words each. I do not want you to simply list out page after page of facts and quotes. You need to think about these questions, draw on what we have covered, and provide convincing answers, backed up with evidence and specific examples, and cited. Though American workers had been struggling to unionize in significant numbers since the 1860s, they were not very successful in building stable, robust national organizations until the 1930s. Why is this so, and what happened to create the conditions necessary for workers’ success in organizing labor unions?   How do we explain the rapid rise in membership, geographical spread, and power of the second Ku Klux Klan, beginning in the 1910s? (CHAPTER 7 will help with this question)

Analyze the state of mind of Holden in the novel The Catcher of the Rye.

Explanation: In order to write your own argument, you need to understand the sources you are going to use.  You will read sources in each module from the list I have provided.  Your annotations will serve as notes for your argument.   Step one to constructing your own argument would be the annotations.  Read the primary sources from each module to annotate, defining “their point” or “their argument” made.   I chose one on de Las Casas to give you an example:   Citation: 01.  Bartolomé de Las Casas, “Exploitation of Indigenous Peoples, 1542,” American Yawp Reader (Stanford, 2019): http://www.americanyawp.com/reader/the-new-world/bartolome-de-las-casas-describes-the-exploitation-of-indigenous-peoples-1542/.  Annotation: 02.  Bartolomé de Las Casas’ writing displays the Indians as a group “assaulted [like] innocent Sheep.”  One could argue that de Las Casas has sympathy for the Indians in this source, while too, displaying the paternalistic view clergymen had of Indians that caused further oppression in New Spain.  Such viewpoints of paternalism reinforce a sense of superiority by Europeans over native peoples.  Las Casas justifies his paternalistic view of the savage Indian, claiming these ‘beings’ “without understanding the true Faith or Sacraments” were in dire need in of the European religion.  Not only does this validate his mission and that of the Catholic Church, this view justifies European domination, their presence in the new world, and in many ways, alleviates the guilt for the sins he (Las Casas) himself committed…***add more*** 03.  Who are they trying to influence?  Why did they select the information they presented, was it to influence, if so, who? ***answer here*** 04.
