Over the past two weeks, our readings and discussions have been focused on establishing a baseline for understanding diversity. In this module, we’ll begin our tour through the four lenses, beginning with history. As we dive into the four lenses, keep in mind that each lens is framed as a way of seeing the issue and is not necessarily tied to the associated discipline. So, looking through the historical lens isn’t just about History Channel documentaries—it’s also about how you use the lens to understand the past and present. As you write your initial post, answer the following questions: In what ways does looking through the history lens enhance your understanding of diversity? Consider a current event in the news that has a historical counterpart. How does looking through the history lens influence how you perceive both the current and historical events? These are just essay questions and no sources are required to be cited. Thanks, let me know if you need anything else.  Purpose:  Following your larger picture reflection of immigration in America between 1880 and 1940, you are now examining the immigration restrictions Congress passed in 1921 and 1924. This assessment is intended to acquaint you with the issue of immigration and nativism in America in the decade of the 1920s. This unit’s assignments will build your skills in interpreting Congressional documents and census data and hone your ability to analyze that information. Task:  It is 1926 and you are running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from Georgia’s 99th Congressional District. You are scheduled to deliver a speech to the voters of your district in which you outline your position on the issue of immigration, specifically on the 1921 and 1924 laws and their effects in America. Prepare and record a 5-minute speech in which you clearly outline your position on the 1921 and 1924 immigration laws (for or against) and explain why you take that position. Support your explanations with details and analysis, do not simply explain the provisions of the laws. Focus Topics/Questions These questions are not to be answered directly in your speech, they are provided only to stimulate your thinking on the issue. ? What are the immigration restrictions in the 1921 immigration law (Emergency Quota Act)? ? What are the immigration restrictions in the 1924 immigration law (National Origins Act)? ? How do the restrictions differ between the two laws? ? Do the laws affect immigration from Europe and Asia equally? ? When do those restrictions take effect? ? Does your speech support the 1921 and 1924 laws? Why or why not? ? What factors did you consider when staking out your position on immigration? ? From what country and when did your own ancestors arrive in America? ? How many immigrants live in Georgia’s 99th District? ? What position does each of the major political parties take on immigration? ? How does the immigration issue fit into the cultural conflict of the 1920s? To assist in drawing your conclusion about immigration refer to chapters 23 and 24 in the textbook, the 1921 law, the 1924 law, and the Population Division and Population Characteristics and Migration excerpts with which you’ve already worked. Criteria on which you will be graded: 1) clearly taking a position and explaining why you take that position; 2) the clarity of your speech; 3) using the 5 minutes appropriately; 4) the logic and coherence of your speech; 5) well-thought-out, respectful responses to at least 2 of your classmates. Your essay must be structure into three separate paragraphs  An Introduction that  discusses  the  bibliographic  details  of  the  source.    Answer  these  questions in your introduction: What source did you choose? Who wrote the source?  When did s/he write it?  What kind of document is it?  Why was it written? A Body paragraph that  analyzes  the  source  and  discusses  its  contents.    Answer  these questions in your body paragraph:  What does the source say? What is the main point being made by the author of the source? What evidence does the author present to prove their point? What is the one sentence in the source that summarizes the main point being made? A Conclusion that explains how the source fits into the larger context of world history as discussed  in  the  chapters  assigned  for  the  Unit.     Answer  these  questions  in  your conclusion:  What was happening in world history that directly relates to this source at the time it was written? Who were the important people  involved in the events discussed in the source?  What were the important events that prompted the writing of the source?  Etc. How does knowing the historical information from the textbook (Who? What? When?) help me better understand the point being made in the source? How  does the  information  from  the  source help me better  understand  the historical information presented in the textbook?  Note the following requirements: The body paragraph must include a full quote (sentence) from your chosen Primary Source.  In text and works citations are required. The conclusion must summarize the historical information in the textbook that relates to time of source.  Specific points made in the textbook must be referenced. Citations (in text and works cited following MLA formatting style) are required.) 3-paragraph essay (min: 300 words):  Choose one source from one of the categories listed below for your Essay post.  Make sure the subject line of your essay lists both the category number and the source number. Introduction Identify and research an individual in history that has made a significant impact on the reforms to intercollegiate athletics. Activity Instructions Please create a narrative that details the impact the individual you chose to research has had while answering the following research questions: What has this person done and what was the mission they set out to achieve? What changes occurred as a result of the impact of their reform? Why do you think this person is significant to the history of athletics and what could be different now if they would not have stood behind their cause? Palette of Narmer and Political Messaging Is there a difference between political messaging today and that in Ancient Egypt?   The Palette of Narmer was created in Ancient Egypt in 2900-2500 BCE at the beginning of the “dynastic period” and is considered to be seminal  in that it set a standard for Egyptian Art that will last for over 3000 years.  With this work, pharaohs began to commission artworks to proclaim their power and copied many of the strategies on display in this work.   How does this work of art reflects Egyptian ideas of political and social hierarchies?    I would like you to consider what is the political message of the work?  What kind of leader does it portray?  What kind of society does it visualize? Please speak to how this is achieved through the visual conventions such as hieratic scale, idealized figures, composite view, and canon of proportions. Next choose a modern political image which you will post with this discussion.  The modern political image should date from between 1900-2020 and should take the form of a political poster which can either be from the USA or another country. Shepard Fairey’s  Hope  poster from 2008 is such an example. There are many such posters and you can search  “presidential campaign posters” as a start in your research.  Artstor is a good resource for this project which is available through our library.  Please submit your image to the same analysis.  What kind of leader does it portray?  What kind of society does it visualize?  How is this achieved through the visual conventions (hieratic scale, idealized figures, composite view, and canon of proportions) used by its authors.
