City of Islands

READ: “Richard B. Moore and Pan-Caribbean Consciousness,” Chapter 3, City of Islands  READ & WATCH:  https://www.npr.org/2016/06/14/481794431/the-chicago-freedom-movement-then-and-now Do a 10 pages Presentation Questions to consider:1.) Compare and contrast Richard B. Moore’s political activism in New York and the Caribbean with the activism of members of the Chicago Freedom Movement for fair housing. Which social justice concerns did they have in common, and how did their political interests differ? Provide at least two concrete examples.2.) Think about the interview by a white woman in the documentary film who said white and black residents did NOT benefit from the desegregation of residential housing in Chicago, but real estate agents were the only people who benefited from the fair housing movement in Chicago. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Explain. What do you think Richard B. Moore would say about this issue? 3.) If you wrote a theatrical play or script for a film about the Chicago Freedom Movement for fair housing, who would be the primary characters/ historical actors?  Write several sentences of dialogue between these characters. 4.) Consider the history of race riots in America– violent uprisings that pitted blacks against whites in major cities across the country. The overwhelmingly negative outcomes of race riots included death, bodily injury, and destroyed property. Can you think of any “positive” aspect of race riots? If so, or if not, why? Explain. Draw upon examples from the Detroit race riot that you learned about in the documentary film “Two Societies.”

The Power of Failure

Read Liz Winhover’s essay, “The Power of Failure” in CEL Ch. 9 (p. 279-282). Answer the following questions about Winhover’s essay in a response of at least 200 words. Given the definition of critical reading above, how well does Winhover’s essay function as a practice of critical reading? How specifically does Winhover step back to reveal how JK Rowling’s commencement speech is working? How would Winhover’s essay change if her focus was on evaluating JK Rowling’s speech instead of reading it critically?  After looking over the Rhetorical Tools for textual analysis on p. 179-182, what particular rhetorical tools does Winhover use most effectively? Why?

The Dog Delusion

Read the following essays from CEL Ch. 8, Making Arguments, in preparation for this discussion: “The Dog Delusion” (Pedersen), CEL Ch. 8, p. 225-229.”Cruelty, Civility, and Other Weighty Matters” (Paulin), p. 230-239″Hive Talkin’: The Buzz around Town about Bees” (Scollon), p. 240-244. After you have read all three essays, read the following questions, and think about how you want to respond: Of the three essays, which essay interested you the most? Why? For instance, was the topic closer to your own interests than the other essays? Did the writer manage to draw you in despite your lack of initial interest? In Ch. 6, the CEL suggests that all writers write with “broad” and “specific” purposes in mind (170). For the essay that you found the most interesting, how do you imagine the writer developed a connection to the “broad purpose” of their topic (also list what that broad purpose is)? Is it clear that the writer already had a passion for the topic through personal experiences or relationships? What do you think the writer’s “specific purpose” is in writing? What do they hope to achieve, and is this hope stated directly? How does the writer’s intensity and passion for the topic show in their writing?

Globalization and its Discontents

With this assignment, you will read and review Globalization and its Discontents. The goal of a book review is to summarize the author’s main argument and the evidence/points used to make that argument. You must also evaluate how they have done so: does their methodology seem sound? What data/evidence do they use? What is their role in the world they are writing about? What might they have done better? What did do they do well? Please note that it is not just your opinion of what they have done, but you must use examples/evidence from the text. You should evaluate how much/what you learn about the main topic (spoiler alert: development and globalization). Below is a link to UNC’s Writing Center, in which they discuss book reviews and I highly recommend you take a look. I have also added to Blackboard an example of a book review I wrote & published on a different text so you have some sort of frame of reference. This assignment should be at least 3 pages double-spaced Times New Roman 12-pt font with 1-inch margins with Chicago Author-Date citations (you’ll need parenthetical citations when you’re quoting directly, even though I know what text you’re pulling from).  Link to UNC page: https://writingcenter.unc.edu/tips-and-tools/book-reviews/  Chicago Author-Date style citations https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide/citation-guide-2.html
