How much government do you believe is necessary for society to function? Is government even truly necessary? In your answer, try to incorporate any readings from the course to help support your answer. 2) Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels described a natural progression toward a classless society due to the conditions of workers and their inevitable revolution. Do you believe that society follows a such a natural progression in this direction or do you reject such an idea? Is a classless society even possible? Does human progress follow any particular path? Explore each of these questions and explain your answer with relevant examples. 3) In this course, we have read influential fascist writings from Benito Mussolini, Alfredo Rocco, and the conspiracy theory The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Given what you have read, what steps/ingredients would you say make it possible for totalitarian movements to attain power? What steps/safeguards do you believe are necessary to prevent such movements from taking hold? Do you believe totalitarianism remains a threat in our modern world and to what extent? 4) We have read a number of texts from Islamist thinkers near the end of this course. What would you describe as some of the main themes of these authors? How do such arguments appeal to their intended audiences? Also, what steps can be taken to counter these ideologies?

Please only choose ONE of the questions based on the book “The Prince” by Macchiaveli listed below and answer it in 4 pages. Try to answer the question, and to develop a persuasive argument in answer to the question. Please include a clear and well structured thesis statement. 1) The first sentence of Hannah Fenichel Pitkin’s book, Fortune is a Woman, is “Niccolò Machiavelli may well be the most political of all the great political theorists; and, like politics itself, Machiavelli horrifies and repels us, yet also attracts and fascinates” (Pitkin 1984, 3). Do you think this description of Machiavelli’s political thought is accurate? What aspects of Machiavelli’s thought are horrifying and repulsive? What aspects are fascinating or attractive? Use examples from The Prince (Machiavelli 2019 [1532]) to explain your answer. 2)What are some of the key aspects of Machiavelli’s political advice to princes? What kind of character should a prince cultivate? How should princes provide for military defense? What other political advice does he offer? Briefly assess this advice and whether it applies to contemporary political leaders or is more appropriate for leaders of Machiavelli’s time. 3) Thomas Hobbes makes frequent references to science, and to geometry, in Leviathan (2018 [1651]). Discuss some of the specific ways that Hobbes discusses science and how he believes it can help to understand political life. Do you think Hobbes is correct in this argument? Why or why not? 4)Discuss Hobbes’ view of human nature, and how humans relate to each other in the state or nature, and under the social contract. Would you want to live in a society bound by the social contract Hobbes describes? Why or why not?

You will then write a 3-page paper detailing your experience and what you learned. You can also propose an alternate project, but it must be approved beforehand. The goal of this assignment is to give you practice in being an engaged citizen that you can continue once the course ends.

You will prepare an original expository essay on the contemporary Army issue facing the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response Prevention (SHARP) program within their organizations. In your essay, explain two recommendations that might improve the effectiveness of your unit’s SHARP. In doing so, use your experience and at least three references to support your proposals.
