Political Persuasion
Discussion #4 — Political Persuasion Contains unread posts – Listen to this episode of Malcom Gladwell’s podcast, “Revisionist History,” in its entirety. As we dive into what makes an argument persuasive, a good starting point is thinking about how likely persuasion even is, and what challenges get in the way. – Prepare a 400-word response based on the following general prompts: – What is this episode about? Describe what goes on in this episode, the personalities involved, and how it all plays out. – What do you think are the big themes, takeaways, or lessons from the episode? Do you agree or disagree with them? Why or why not? – What lessons might you learn specifically about public speaking from this episode? Political Theory
Contrast communitarianism with a more individualistic theory such as John Rawls. How would a communitarian respond to such an individualistic theory? This paper is supposed to be an interpretation of some aspect of the works, in other words, an argument concerning some aspect of the work based on analysis of relevant textual evidence. This paper is not supposed to be a summary of the work, a statement of your opinion about the work, or a discussion of its historical significance or relevance. Frame this paper as an investigation of why and how the author makes the argument he or she does rather than simply saying what is said. Turn the topic into an argument. Must include a clear statement of your argument, provide relevant evidence, reasoning, and clear writing, demonstrate an understanding of the work. Cite the works by page numbers in parenthesis after the relevant reference or quotation. If it is clear what work you are quoting from, simply put the page number in parentheses. If you need to clarify which work you are using, simply add the author. You do not need to cite the specific edition of these works or include a bibliography unless using other sources. I have attached the powerpoints and readings with all the info.
Cultural Heritage
Discuss the problematic relationship that Italian American women writers/poets/filmmakers/performers reveal with their cultural tradition. How does this cultural tradition define women within the bounds of the domestic space and how do the women artists and writers depict and react to the domestic space and to the traditional role of woman? Discuss how the Italian American women must negotiate between the public and private spheres, between the family and the individual, between self-denial and self-affirmation. In the paper, you may also wish to consider how the cult of the Virgin (the figure of the “Madonna”), which shapes definitions of femininity in Italian American culture, has had tremendous repercussions on external perception and self-representations of women. International Relationship
Essay prompt: For this reflection essay, discuss this quote from A.C. McKeils 2017 e-ir essay, A Brief Introduction to the Study of International Relations : What Ken Booth (2014) calls big and important problems are first and foremost what brings most students to IR. Every student will have a real-world issue or concern that s/he brings to the study, and which she can make her/his specialty. It is these personally recognized public problems that make the intellectual world of IR visible to the student. It is from these problems that the questions spring. Why are these problems going on? Must they? Or, can they be otherwise? Something I have always felt is close to the spirit of studying IR, is the drive to make the world a better place, to address the big and important problems of the world, to throw ourselves at their betterment. The study of IR is first and foremost a study, an intellectual activity, with an intellectual world, but awareness of it and interest in it comes from real-world problems International problems are the reason why we get to the international questions.
