Macrosociology and microsociology are two different approaches that sociologists use to research and understand the social world.  Macrosociology is a ‘”big picture” approach, through which sociologists explore social issues at the structural and institutional levels.  Microsociology is focused more on the individual and small groups, examining social interactions and social construction of reality. For this assignment, (1) identify an editorial piece or opinion-editorial piece on a recent or ongoing news story, (2) evaluate the use of both macrosociological and microsociological perspectives by the author of the piece. Does their argument rely more on one than the other? Is there a healthy balance between the two? How might the argument be made more effective by integrating the two? Your paper should be between 500 and 700 words. It should include a properly formatted citation of the piece you are evaluating. (Any of the three styles are acceptable).

Sampling In qualitative and quantitative studies, sampling refers to selecting a particular sample of individuals from a larger population. This process is often called participant selection. Qualitative research collects rich data from fewer sources, while quantitative research attempts to collect a larger, more representative sample from the population as a whole. Selection criteria for eligibility in a study is similar for both quantitative and qualitative studies, however, there are some differences with respect to the procedures used and the size of the samples. Instructions: Consider a particular topic (this can be the topic from one of your previous discussions or assignments), and a particular qualitative or quantitative research design and state the factors you would consider in choosing participants for the study. Be sure to answer the following in your discussion: What sampling method would you use? How would you go about deciding how many participants to select given a particular methodology? What factors should be considered regarding sample size, representativeness, and apparent biases in the selection of the sample? Your post should be at least 300 words.

Introduction In this unit we have learned about social stratification within our society. As individuals we each have a unique location within these social structures that provides both privileges/opportunities and disadvantages/constraints. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on your own social location and describe your position within structural systems. Directions In a 2-3 page(not including the title or reference pages) paper answer the following questions. This graphic will help you think through your various identities and begin to see how the social categories you belong to may provide advantage or disadvantage. The purpose of this paper is self-reflection paired with course concepts. The strongest papers will both effectively reflect on personal biography and apply sociological concepts presented in the readings and notes.

150 lines explaining each topic i have listed will be used on a discussion board post . Why do you think some people are more empathetic toward the poor than others? Can empathy be learned or can one’s ability to be empathetic change over the life course?   What is the concept of the self made man? How does this relate to the concept of the American dream? How might both of these concepts combine to affect our ideas about poverty and social mobility?

Consider why persons with disabilities are considered a vulnerable population. Share with others experiences you may have had with individuals born with a physical ailment, children or adults with cognitive delays, people who may have suffered traumatic brain injury (i.e. possibly due to an accident, effects from war, etc.). What have you learned about challenges that impact their lives, that you may not have considered without this personal experience? Research programs that exist (America, or globally) to better integrate persons with disabilities into society and mitigate the disparities they face. Develop your own list of opportunities/programs/activities that can better support people with various disabilities. Consider the Micro and Macro approach to your thinking, and develop at least one idea per level. Why do you feel these may be viable solutions? What may be some of the barriers that these ideas face?
