Watch the following TED Talk Danger of a Single Story by the Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and respond to the following prompt: QUESTION: Connecting Adichie’s ted talk to Peggy McIntosh’s discussion on privilege, discuss how the notion of privilege has influenced and continues to influence life in the US and other countries?

Fincham & Beach – According to the authors, given the role of religion in positive relationship functioning, initiatives designed to enhance marital quality could be informed by the positive role that religion plays in the marital lives of many couples. However, there are many forms of religions, and a good number of people who consider themselves non-religious as well. Is there something especially unique about religion in general that fosters positive relationships, or is it purely that religious people involved in a congregation may have more people to turn to in times of distress? How can therapists help struggling couples view their marriage as sacred without referencing religious doctrines? Is this even possible? Establishing rapport, building networks, and creating collaborative partnerships within communities are important components of the work that human service professionals do when advocating for children and their families. For this Assignment, you are going to assume that you are a human service professional working in a community, and advocating for a social issue that impacts children and their families. Your Assignment needs to address the components listed below. Describe a fictional community, or one that already exists, and assume that you are doing work within this community as a human service professional. In your description, provide information related to the demographics of the community, the history of the community, the community culture, and the economics of the community. Determine what type of social issue related to children and their families that the community is struggling with, and that you will be advocating for as a human service professional. Based on the specific information pertinent to the community that you described, examine ways that you will establish and build rapport with members of the community. In your answer, explore how you will build trust with community members, and how you will involve citizens in building rapport. Make sure the information that you discuss is specific to the social issue you are looking to address. Determine how you will build networks in the community that you described which are specific to the advocacy work that you will be doing for the social issue you discussed. Assess how you will build collaborative partnerships in the community. If your community is fictional, make up organizations that would be beneficial to partner with. If you are using a real community, research organizations, or other places, that would be beneficial to partner with. Justify whether or not you will seek to establish multicultural collaborations in your community. If you do determine these collaborations are appropriate, explore why they are beneficial with regard to your overall goal to advocate for the social issue that you chose. Your Assignment should reflect professional writing standards using proper tone and language. The writing style should be correct, accurate, and reflect knowledge of the importance of establishing rapport and building networks and collaborative partnerships within a community. Rather than just summarize these readings, I want you to write a paragraph response where you choose at least one argument or example from EACH article and discuss how you agreed or disagreed.  Then think and discuss sociologically how your own experiences or views of your family relate to the issue of intermarriage.

In the Editor’s Introduction to Section One:  Theorizing Race, Racism, and Race Inequalities (textbook), we are introduced to the concept of color-blind racism which, based in the work of Bonilla-Silva (2013), is defined as “a racial ideology that explains contemporary racial inequality as the outcome of nonracial dynamics…” (Golash-Boza 2016:45). Thus, rather than linking racist ideology to structural and individual racism, we cite other causes such as, economic factors, or differences in behavior or culture. Bonilla-Silva (2013) uses several frameworks to illustrate how color-blind racism works: (1) abstract liberalism, (2) naturalization, (3) minimization of racism, and (4) cultural racism. Discuss one of these strategies in a well-developed initial post. Your initial post should include a definition of your selected strategy, and your original thoughts, and ideas on how this strategy contributes to color-blind racism. Make sure that you offer a critical analysis. Integrate the text and/or supplementary scholarly material into your initial post. Imagine that two focus groups have been conducted in an Asian American and immigrant community in a large urban city. The rationale of conducting the qualitative study was because it has been noted that many Asian Americans and immigrants are reluctant to seek mental health services. To further understand this issue, service providers including social workers, counselors, doctors, and nurses were recruited to discuss the barriers in implementing mental health services targeted to Asian Americans and immigrants. After the focus groups were transcribed, two research assistants were hired to conduct a content analysis of the transcripts. Refer to the Week 5 Handout: Content Analysis of Focus Groups. As the social worker, you have been asked to analyze the focus group data and are charged with working with an advisory board in the community to formulate social work practice recommendations using the ecological model.
