Before writing your paper: READ the article: Ridley, Matt and Bobbi S. Low, “Can Selfishness Save the Environment?” in The Atlantic, September 1993 (on file) WATCH the film, “Flow: For Love of Water,” at the following link. The film has some subtitles and additional information. So, please watch: In a 1000-1100 words response, answer the following questions According to the reading by Ridley and Low, people behaving selfishly (motivated by self-interest) can result in environmental degradation. Explain how and why. Can the same argument be applied to organizations that have a bottom line? (7 points) Define privatization. Do you think environmental goods and services such as water should be privatized? What groups are likely to negatively impacted by privatization? When traditional markets fail to provide optimum solutions, is government intervention justified. Explain using the Ridley and Low reading as well as specific examples from the film to support your views. (7 points) What are some of the main themes highlighted in the film, “Flow, For Love of Water?” What were some of the examples of water privatization in both poor and wealthy countries. Include five-six issues from the film that you found particularly discussion-worthy. (8 points) Finally, (a) find out if the water source at your home is privatized or not. What company and when was the water privatized? (b) In the United States, research two other areas (not mentioned in the film) where water is at the center of conflict, whether quality or privatization. (c) Have there been any protests, social movements, or policies put in place to address part (b) (8 points)

To prepare for this Assignment, imagine that you are the social worker assigned to work with Paula Cortez (see the case study, “Social Work Research: Single Subject” in this week’s resources). After an initial assessment of her social, medical, and psychiatric problems, you develop a plan for intervention. Conduct a literature search related to the chronic issues related to HIV/AIDS and bipolar mental disorder. Search for additional research related to assessing outcomes and theoretical frameworks appropriate for this client. For example, your search could include terms such as motivational interviewing and outcomes and goal-oriented practice and outcomes. You might also look at the NREPP database identified in Week 1, to search for interventions related to mental health and physical health. By Day 7 Submit a 5 page proposal/research plan for single-system (subject) evaluation for your work with Paula Cortez. Identify the problems that you will target and the outcomes you will measure, select an appropriate intervention or interventions (including length of time), and identify an appropriate evaluation plan. Include a description of: The problem(s) that are the focus of treatment The intervention approach, including length of time, so that it can be replicated A summary of the literature that you reviewed that led you to select this intervention approach The purpose for conducting a single-system (subject) research evaluation The measures for evaluating the outcomes and observing change including: Evidence from your literature search about the nature of the measures The validity and reliability of the measures How baseline measures will be obtained How often follow-up measures will be administered The criteria that you would use to determine whether the intervention is effective How the periodic measurements could assist you in your ongoing work with Paula

Research – Community Service 2-3 pages  –  Find and interview an organization that offers community service in your area. Describe the work they are doing, their mission, their population and the challenges. Interview at least one person about the experiences; asking about challenges and rewards. Do you think you purchase goods made in sweatshops? Look up where some of your clothes and goods are made. Look up the records on the working conditions of the workers in companies that make your products. Who actually made them? If they were made in sweatshops, does that matter? Why or why not? Explain the process of gender socialization and how we learn to become men and women in society.  As young children, the family and school play a primary role in our socialization. How are children are socialized into the gender dichotomy in school? As we grow older the mass media plays a central role in our gender socialization. Using examples from any type of social media, explain the role of popular culture in our ongoing gender socialization. What are some ways you think we can socialize our children into a more gender equal/neutral society? Explain in detail your ideas.

Gender as Art Gender Expression/Presentation: external appearance of one’s gender identity, usually expressed through behavior, clothing, haircut or voice, and which may or may not conform to socially defined behaviors and characteristics typically associated with being either masculine or feminine. Directions: For this project I want you to explore the concept of gender through art. Thinking back on the semester and all the topics we have covered in class and in reflecting on your own gender expression, I want you to create a piece of art that expresses gender. You can feel free to get creative with this assignment but their is no expectation that you are all artists. Let’s be clear, I am NOT an artist. You do not need to be an art major to complete this assignment. Just be creative.
