Read through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.   Think carefully about the implications of the various human rights (‘Articles’) in the UN Declaration. All of these articles posit certain rights and guarantees for all human beings. These include an adequate standard of living, equal pay, access to a quality education, tolerance/understanding of differences, etc.  Choose a human right from the list (if there is another ‘right’ that is related to the one you choose, you may also include that).  Address the following questions: To what extent are those rights being accomplished or violated? How so? (provide examples). Are they supported or hindered by social institutions (the US/Global economy, education, the media, etc.)? –Refer to at least 3 literature/data sources. Apply relevant concepts/terms discussed in class.  What are some actions people can take to advance/advocate for these rights?  Draw from history (actions taken in the past that lead to social change); contemporary techniques (social media, for example); and/or actions you observed during your service learning. Do you think the aims of the organizations you participated with (and the time you spent helping them) have had an important impact on ensuring that basic human rights are being met? **Your essay should be 3-4 pages long, typed and double-spaced.  All margins should be 1″.  **Cite your literature sources: Use in-text citation and include a works cited page.

This writing project focuses on the three major theoretical perspectives in Sociology -symbolic interactionism, functionalism and conflict theory. Each of these theories is like a lens through which we can view social life. Therefore, it is necessary to have an understanding of each theory. The student is to define the major points of each perspective in a 1000 word essay.  Points will be deducted if the student does not meet the word count.  In the assignment include at least one sociologist who has been identified with each theoretical perspective and provide an example that demonstrates an understanding of the perspective. A comprehensive definition of each is presented by the author of the text. However, I would encourage you to gather and present additional material on the frameworks

And as Americans speak today of “the clash of civilizations,” the foremost “us and them” binary that comes to their minds is NOT East and West, North and South, capitalism and communism, rich and poor, but Christianity and Islam…As it predates 9/11, this rejection cannot be attributed to the trauma of the terrorist attacks, and is quite clearly based in religious intolerance, the assumption that Arabs are irrevocably “other” because they are Muslim, aliens in this Judeo-Christian culture.” (155-156)  “The failure to identify racism and religious intolerance as a major social wrong in the United States – despite the country’s very long history of institutionalized discrimination grounded in these oppressive systems – closely parallels mainstream Western feminism’s failure to identify many Arab women’s oppressors in their home countries. For these women are veiled, and isn’t the veil the region’s greatest evil? Thus, many “progressive feminists” fail to acknowledge that Palestinian women’s freedom of movement, their freedom to vote, to obtain an education and access to health care, and the basic right to have a roof over their heads in their own historic homeland, is denied them not by Arab men, but by the brutal Israeli occupier, very generously backed by American tax dollars…Additionally, one could argue that the Arab regimes most oppressive of women, such as in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, would not stay in power were it not for their close ties with the American government. And while Arab men must certainly be held accountable for their treatment of Arab women, one must also keep in mind that Arab women are ultimately victimized by the United States and Israel that have very real adverse effects on their everyday lives, and that “Arab women’s liberation” (from Arab patriarchy) would be moot in the political context of an ongoing brutal occupation or tyranny kept in place by the West.” (157)

In this essay you will be drawing upon Ann Travers’ book The Trans Generation to explore the ways gender structures the lives of children and the harm this causes.  Specifically, you will utilize course concepts and readings in order to explain why trans and gender nonconforming kids are disabled and rendered precarious within schools.  Based on your analysis, you will propose social changes that would protect and support children.  First: Why are schools such difficult and dangerous spaces for trans and gender nonconforming kids? Which kids experience the most precarity?  Then: Given this, what concrete social changes are needed to support trans and gender nonconforming kids and why might those changes benefit everyone?
